Hi, first time poster here. My name is Bob and I'm schizophrenic. I've been on SSI for several years now and just completed my first reevaluation and it was found I can keep my SSI. My current doctor retired and I'm looking for a new one. Before I go any further it should be noted that I do not own a car and car ownership is beyond my means financially. My first option for a doctor is in Lewiston. A board certified psychiatrist. Very nice, very competent. However it's a 70 mile roundtrip. I had been hoping to use COAST for this but their funding recently got cut and it's not a reliable option anymore. My second option is an ARNP specializing in psychiatry within walking distance from my house. She's very nice and seems good at her job. My question is, does Social Security care whether I am under the treatment of a board certified psychiatrist or an ARNP? If possible I would like to use the ARNP since walking to the clinic once a month is a lot less hardship than trying to find a 70 mile car ride once a month. Anybody know? I don't want to lose my SSI because I went to the wrong provider. I live in a very rural area and there aren't many providers here.

Welcome to Psych Central. Sorry you lost your doctor. Another option is online therapy.
What this takes is talking to an expert on SSI or researching online. Answering question ahead of time can save a lot of grief.
