a lot of meds have prescription help programs that pay for them if people cant afford them. if you go to the med maker web site you can typically find the forms to apply for the assistance program. most times the dr. needs to sign them, sometimes an advocate in necessary to apply for them such as the glaxo welcome meds. it is income based and you need to reapply each year. some need tax returns, others just the drs signature saying the patient cant afford the meds. the patient will either get a card to pick the meds up at the pharmacy or meds are mailed directly to the patient. you can pretty much find it by typing in the name of the med and adding patient assistance program. good luck.

Food stamps should be the easiest benefit for her to get. (She should get about a hundred dollars a month in SNAP.)

Your daughter is an excellent example of why Medicaid expansion is so necessary. With a documented history of such severe mental health problems, she might be able to get SSI. (I'm figuring she hasn't worked enough to get SSDI.) Do hook up with a law firm. I recommend you call one of those big firms that advertize on TV.

Meanwhile, try and help her get whatever services are available for free. See if your community has a place offering "healthcare for the homeless." She needs that well-developed paper trail of being a client of mental health services. Her drinking doesn't help that much. She needs to have a diagnosis established that is independent of the drinking.

I'm sorry your daughter is so deeply troubled. Sounds like a heartbreaking situation.

Sorry that I don't have an answer. If it were me, I would call 211 and the department of transitional assistance in your area, which I suspect you already did. I would also write letters to legislatures but I doubt they would do anything fast. Hope you find a solution.

I'm really sorry you're going through all this. I think applying for SSI is a great start. She also should easily qualify for food stamps or SNAP and maybe cash assistance as well. Does her state have no Medicaid at all? Maybe it differs from state to state, but I know in CA, even if you're exclusively on SSI, you qualify for medicare after two years. I know that's a while off, but maybe something to get started. Look into the rules/benefits for your specific state. Call your local SSA office. Like a previous poster said, most community mental health centers work on a sliding scale, they're usually the county health centers. Also any clinic that operates out of a teaching hospital will operate on a steep sliding scale and you usually get pretty good care because patients are seen by both a resident and their supervising physician. They also often have access to specialists. Also there is a lot more assistance out there if you look for it. It's a lot of work and a general pain in the ***, but most states have subsidized housing vouchers, where rent is significantly reduced, there's often a significant waiting list, so I'd look into this ASAP, internet and energy companies also subsidize bills depending on income a lot of the time. Also, if she qualifies for SNAP, they provide a free, not a smart phone, but a free cell phone. As far as meds go, as a previous poster said, some of the larger companies will provide drug assistance programs. For those meds that you can't get assistance for, a lot of the time, there are cheaper alternatives. You just need to be creative. I can help you with this and what to discuss with her doctor. Almost every state has a "$4" program, where various generics are $4 at Wal-Mart, target and most of the major grocery stores. There are several antidepressants, and a couple mood stabilizers included on these lists, several of which work just as well as the newer latest and greatest. And finally, even if meds aren't on these lists, there are several drug assistance programs. Some are beneficial, some not, but many meds have cheaper alternatives, both generic and name brand. She has some options. Don't lose hope. She still has the possibility of having a productive life. Please, PM me or reply on here if you have any more questions. Meds are something I know a lot about, I'd be happy to help. Hang in there. Again, I'm sorry you're going through all this.

In California, anyone who gets SSI automatically gets Medicaid, and there is no 2 year waiting period to get it. That's true in most states.

There are no states that don't have a Medicaid program.

All states have subsidized housing vouchers.

Rules about who is eligible for Medicare are the same in all states. The federal government, and only the federal government, decides who is eligible for Medicare.

Have you looked in to county based Health care. It is income based across all states.

Medicaid and Medicare are not the same thing.

That's true. Medicaid programs are run by the states to finance healthcare for the poor. Each state sets up the criteria for who qualifies. In some states, just about all very poor people can get it, while, in other states, only certain groups of poor can get it.

Medicare is operated by the federal government. The rules for getting on Medicare are the same all over the country. It's mainly for people over 65 and for the disabled. (The disabled must be on disability for 2 years before being eligible.)

Some people qualify for both Medicaid and Medicare. Some get just one or the other. Some people who are on Medicaid get all Medicaid benefits, while some only get partial benefits.

In some states, a person on disability can get Medicaid during the two years that they are waiting for Medicare. In some states, the can't.

There are some drug companies who will provide at least temporary free medicine. What I found disconcerting was that the drug I was needing is out of this world expensive - around $800 for 3 months, that is essential and without which I feel and function horribly - disqualified me because I was on Medicare and near as i can figure they would have given the medication to someone who had a higher income than me while I just got penalized. They said the best they could do was to help me file an appeal with my prescription drug provider. Thanks for blowing me off.
