Hi, I was informed by mail on August 10th that as of August 1st (!!) I had been dropped from my health insurance. No one seems sure as to why I was dropped, but I suspect it was because I quit my job in June. I had been on Kaiser insurance (money grubbing huge corporation that only cares about getting people's $). I am sure I'm eligible for government health care (I don't know what it's called - maybe 'medicaid'- except that in California it's called 'Medi-Cal'). The very day I found out I'd been dumped by my ins provider I applied for Medi-Cal. Okay, fine. BUT I have only enough medication for 2 weeks. At that point I won't be able to afford to pay out-of-pocket for my meds.

I am absolutely panicked with the terror that I will suddenly be out of medication. Does anyone have direct experience with this, and know what to do? I am very low-income at this point and definitely cannot suddenly go off meds.

Should I just go to the local ER? Does anyone know if there's some kind of emergency, immediate aid through medicaid?

Hi LauraBeth. I'm going to put a couple things here, but don't know if they'll be helpful.
First, check with your case worker at social services to see if there is any special fund for emergencies. Also, is there a free clinic you can go to? Is your doctor through the insurance? Do you think s/he could get you some samples? You could also try local churches, United Way, or call 211. You may actually want to start with 211, come to think of it.

I hope you can get some help.

jaynedough, Thank you so much. You have some excellent ideas - I had totally forgotten about 211! Great idea. I might have found a free clinic in the town where I live, also I'm going to call my case worker and see if I can actually get through to her. If not, I'll go to the office in person and see if that gets any results.

Again, thank you so much.
