Does anyone know of a bank in Canada that will wave fees for those on assistance? Yes $15 a month doesn't sound like a lot but it really makes a difference to me. It makes the difference between eating and not eating the last days of the month.

You are paying a lot. Your bank is ripping you off. Can you change the services on your account?
I don't know of any banks that waive monthly fees for social assistance clients. I'm on ODSP and pay $4 a month at RBC. __________________ Dx: Didgee Disorder |

rcat I only know of the Royale Bank of Montreal. I know your banking rules are different than here. I agree with Didgee it sounds like they are ripping you off. Is it because you don't make a larger amount of money for free chequing? I know they do that here. And if you are over 55 they waiver fees and give free cheques. Does your bank offer that? There is TDbank also. It is worth checking into. tc

Tangerine bank, no fee chequing account is what I use. The only fees they have is if you go into overdraft or if you want to use e-interac(email money transfer).

thanks everyone. I actually use TD. I talked to them about this hoping that as an act of good will they would remove the monthly fee - or at least give me some cheques. Nope. In fact they were quite rude about it - which is yet another reason to switch banks.
Noca86 - I have looked into both Tangerine and President's Choice and either may get my service. The thing is that you can bet if I was dealing with large amounts of money I would certainly get what I wanted. TD incidentally wants to charge me $56 for 25 plain cheques! |

You're definitely getting ripped off. I pay 6.99 at RBC.
