I'm being recertified and my rent is going up 150 dollars. I'm going to resubmit some forms and hope it goes down. But I know I can't afford that much of an increase. I don't know what to do. I couldn't sleep all night I was so worried. I only have a few days to get what I need and it's just not that easy. Seeing my arms worker today I hope she helps me.

I'm sorry you're going through this. That's outrageous for a rent increase. Good luck on getting it reduced.

What a massive increase. I am so sorry. Hopefully, there are some other options that won't move you too far away.

Possibly working more hours but no pay raise. It's outrageous.

It's up 112 starting next month. Sucks but I'm staying. I'll figure it out somehow.

Find a roommate situation. A rent increase of $150 is illegal. Sorry you are going through this.

What to Do When Your Landlord Raises the Rent

Quote:
Unfair Rent Increases

If you think that your rent increase is unfair or is done in retaliation to get you to move, you can contact a landlord-tenant attorney in your state to talk about your options. An attorney familiar with the laws that pertain to tenant rights in your state will be necessary to move forward with defending yourself legally.
Rent Increases | Nolo

Some landlords are slum lords. I rented a cute studio apartment across the street from a park in a walkable neighborhood that I just loved. But, every year, my slumlord landlord increased rent by $85.00 so I could only afford to stay in that cute studio for 3 years before I had to move out.

Wow. Is it subsidized housing? It’s not a normal increase.

Subsidized housing is rent controlled and discounted because the tenant pays what they can afford. This sounds to me like a slumlord. There’s no rent control in any state unless the county or govt pays for the low income housing.

We have rent control in many cities in California. That said, the rents are outrageously high.

But a rent increase like yours, Aviza? That does sound illegal.

Our rent only goes up by few dollars and we aren’t in subsidized housing. You are in subsidized housing on disability. How can they raise that high???

I live in Southern California so I am not sure what the law is in the Midwest, where the OP lives.

But here, unfortunately, unless you are on a lease, it's perfectly legal for a landlord to raise the rent as much as they want.

The landlord only has to give you 2 months' notice of the increase. There is really no limit on how much they can raise it.

I looked into the legalities because my rent was raised $250 last October. It literally caused almost all of my hair to fall out from the stress. I was barely making ends meet before, and now I go into debt every month just because the landlord is greedy.

I am on a month-to-month tenancy, so I don't have any rights. It's hard work being poor! I hate it. It's even worse trying to provide enough documentation to get food stamps and Medi-Cal. Ugh.

I feel for you, I really do. But we are stuck. There are no rights for renters anymore.
