I received a facebook IM from someone in HR at a company I used to work for saying that they owed me money, and to get in touch with another person. This sounded a bit fishy so I contacted a friend who still works there, and she said the person contacting me was legit.

I have no idea what the money is from, or how much it is, but even a couple of hundred bucks would help me right now

This is all especially weird since I left the company in 2006.

Hi splitimage. I guess a lot of this depends on how much you trust the person.

If it were me I would ask myself some questions.
Is there anyway to look back in bank records to see if I wrote them a check?

Am I the kind of person that would give someone a couple hundred dollars if they were in need?

Do I have a post office box that would not reveal my street address and they could send me a check?

Is there someone in my past that might be trying to find out where I am that I absolutely would not be comfortable talking to them.

Is it possible a collection agency is trying to locate me to pay some disputed bill?

Good luck figuring this one out.

It turned out to be totally legitimate.

After confirming that the person who IM'd me did in fact work for the company I gave her my email. She passed it on to the benefits administrator who contacted me by e-mail. It turns out that when they'd calculated my severance pension amount, they'd under calculated one portion of it, and she sent me the pension statement showing the calculation and balance due.

It's not a huge amount of money - just under 600, but heck I'll take it. It'll help me pay off some debt.

Now I just have to have a phone conversation with her, this morning, to figure out the logistics of getting me paid.

If receiving this 'money' involves divulging any personal information whatsoever I would really be suspicious.

Just a quick update. This turned out to be totally legitimate. They deposited the money into my bank account overnight.

This little windfall really helps me out.
