And why does my budget LOOK (on paper) as if I have enough money for food? But the reality is after I pay my bills I struggle to buy groceries

What is included in “the bills”? Water and utilities, but what else?

For SNAP in your state, a household of 1 can only make gross income of $1580 and that person might be eligible.

If you’re making $17 an hour working 24 hrs a week, you are above the threshold at approximately $1632.

Thank you for your response.

Heat & water are included in rent. Belmont does this crazy formula to determine my portion. It's basically 30% of my income.

I know I don't qualify for foodstamps. But I'm struggling so greatly to make ends meet.

I have some minor health issues (including mental), so I can't eat most of the food from the pantries. Also, due to my mental health, I'm afraid to work full time.

On paper, it seems like I make enough to survive. But in reality, I can hardly afford food after I pay my bills. Does that make sense?

Whats the question?

You have 1800 income, so you pay about 600 in rent. So thats about a third, or thirty percent.

That leaves 1200 for everything else. Do you pay for a car, car insurance, gasoline, cable, phone, any medical stuff, personal care, stuff for the kids or grandkids, meals out, Starbucks? That wont leave you much for food.

From what ive seen of food pantry youtubes, its not ALL mac'n'cheese - they often have frozen meat and fresh or canned fruit and vegetables, beans and rice. Sometimes you can choose, sometimes you cant. Maybe your kids can use the more processed stuff.

Did you read my entire post?
No matter what math they are using (only posted it for those interested) I still barely have enough to survive after I pay my bills.

No food pantry near me offers fresh food.

I don't have kids at home and wouldn't feed them the garbage food pantries offer if I did.

My health issues don't allow me to eat canned processed or wheat products

Did you read my post? How are you allocating your remaining $1200? You could be spending 600 towards other expenses, and 600 towards food.

I dont understand your hostility towards me. I put more than half of my social security towards rent, utilities, and health insurance. I dont have a car or cable tv, i take the bus or uber, and have an old fashioned antenna plus amazon prime for movies. I understand you may need a car for your job, but insurance, gasoline, and payments can be very expensive relative to your income.

I eat canned fish, canned beans, canned veg and oatmeal. There are low-sodium options for these. If you can be more specific about your food restrictions, or what you can eat, maybe we can offer better advice.

Again, not really sure what you are asking. The math adds up for the rent portion. Have you ever written up a monthly budget to see where your money goes? Lots of google help available.
