I completed the ODSP application today. The lady told me I met the financial requirements for assistance. Now I have to wait for CRA to confirm the information I provided before I get funds. She told me that will take about a day. Since it is Friday I won’t know until next week.

The lady didn’t ask too many invasive questions about my situation. After I told her my story, she told me I could have applied last fall while I was on EI. When she told me I could have kept my $13 000.00 in savings I nearly cried. She wanted to know why I didn’t apply then especially since I am able to return to the program anytime I need it as long as I meet the financial requirements. Honestly I thought the asset limit was $10 000.00. The hope of finding work before my funds ran out and my pride were my other reasons.

My savings are all gone which is disappointing. I’m just relieved I will be able to pay my rent.

I'm glad that the interview went well and that you'll be able to get back on it, without problem. I'm sorry about your savings, they raised the asset limit a couple of years ago, at the same time that they raised the amount of exempt earnings.

Thank you splitimage

The asset rules changed not long before I left the program in 2019. Unfortunately I wasn’t aware of the changes. I did hear about the exempt earnings increase because it made the news in 2022.

In the past one had to exhaust their resources before they could apply. This was a really cruel policy. Now, they actually encourage you not to do this (according to Reddit's ODSP sub), since the benefit isn't enough to survive on when paying market rent.
