My sibling recently came out as transgender/non binary and while I am totally supportive its causing a lot of tension and conflict in our family. Basically I would appreciate any advice to make this easier for them and us. Since my sibling and my mom seem to fight constantly even though my mom is also an ally. My dad says he is ok with it. But he was always such a homophobe when I was growing up its really hard to even believe hes fine with it. His family is very traditional and judgemental and so we have not told them. Right now my sibling (I dont say sister because they asked to be refered to in a gender neutral way) is staying with a family friend. I want them to come home but they said its too upsetting right now. I love them and want them to be happy but they are very depressed and anxious, we really don't know what to do. They have been going to therapy but it hasn't helped and its been months. I know its not easy being transgender but I wish there was something more we could do.

Hey summerblueskies,

thank you for coming here in support of your sibling! Bring supportive is the biggest thing you can do, and accepting their chosen name and pronouns is an important sign of support.

Has the tension existed in the family before they came out? Sometimes these can be different (although linked) issues.

Right now I think the best way of showing support is to use the preferred name and pronouns and maybe read up on the trans* nonbinary experience. I like Mikah's blog neutrois.me a lot, for example.
Thanks for this!
