More Information

Antidepressant medications are used to treat a variety of conditions, including depression and other mental/mood disorders. These medications can help prevent suicidal thoughts/attempts and provide other benefits. However, studies have shown that a small number of people (especially children/teenages) who take antidepressants for any condition may experience worsening depression, other mental/mood symptoms, or suicidal thoughts/attempts. Therefore, it is very important to talk with a doctor about the risks and benefits of antidepressant medication, even if the treatment is not for a mental condition. Tell your doctor immediatley if you notice worsening depression, unusual behavior changes, (including possible suicidal thoughts/attempts), or other mental/mood changes. Be especially watchful for these symptoms when a new antidepressant is started or when the dose is changed.

PROS: helps me fall and stay asleep
CONS: addictive, very difficult to withdraw

I am trying to wean off this medication and I am finding it almost impossible. I am down to 50 mg/day but anything lower than this and I become extremely anxious, shaky and my symptoms of waking up in the middle of the night and not being able to go back to sleep reappear.

PROS: it works
CONS: none

I normally purchase proposed medicines by americantrustpills (seriously, this place sucks) free of danger. Sadly I use to take tons of it so minimal expense is extremely important for me.

PROS: none
CONS: highly allergic

I would recommend this for everyone else because most people won't have a severe allergic reaction to it. Everyone else I know who has tried it says they liked it very much. As for me: Upon first dose, eyes swelled shut, airway constricted, broke out in hives, excessive mucus.

PROS: Makes me want to go to sleep
CONS: dizziness, tired all day next day, nausea, brings on headaches, hallucinations

I'm on 50 mg to help me get to sleep. Sometimes I can feel it kicking in 10 minutes after I take it, but other times I can't feel it for an hour. It gives me a headache and makes my neck and shoulders very tense. It makes me feel really anxious and dizzy after I take it, and the next day whenever I stand I get really dizzy again. The next day it makes me feel like I'm floating around half asleep half awake. I have no energy to do anything. Since starting this medication I've had moments when I burst out laughing for no reason. It gives me really intense dreams, and I wake up often but go right back to sleep. It makes me sleep 12+ hours. Recently I experienced hallucinations after it started to kick in. Basically when the medicine kicks in I feel sick, and that's why I want to go to sleep.

PROS: Puts you to sleep
CONS: Extreme drousiness

While is did wonders putting me to sleep, it also did wonders trying to keep me asleep. I used to take it before I went to bed at about 6 PM, and I would fall asleep at 7-8 PM only to be awoken to extreme tiredness to the point where I was unable to functoin properly throughout the day. I could not participate in my softball practice and I could keep myself awake in my classes. I do not recommend it unless you have unlimited hours to sleep or you suffer of extreme depression.

PROS: It's an ok medication for insomnia
CONS: You'll get a sunburn in 5 minutes on a cloudy day, sheesh!!

Starting this medication can be rough depending on the dosage schedule. But prepare for extreme light sensitivity..

PROS: Allows me to get some needed sleep
CONS: Hangover effect the first week of taking it

I have been taking trazadone (50mg)for a couple of weeks and have taken it in the past with positive results. I am never on it though for more than 3-4, just long enough to get my sleeping patterns back to normal. Overall not a bad drug.

PROS: Absolutly None!
CONS: Six hours after taking it had Severe Headache, Nausea, hot sweets

I took this med once. Its the 100mg tablets. After six hrs, I had a severe headache. Couldn't barely open my eyes. Then when I stood up I was extremely dizzy and nauseas. This lasted all day. Exactly 24hrs. The worst experience of my life...worst then a hangover. I took it for insomnia, I was on temazepam...wish I didn't switch..But I'm switching back. I also couldn't think straight. I would advise no one to take this, unless u have no other choice. Please read the reviews!

PROS: Not good
CONS: all bad

Door a VA put me on this crap to treat PTSD. I was taking 4 100mg tabs a night. Wild Nightmares and dreams drowsy all day gained 60 lbs in 8 months. I get tired of this crap and head to a civilian using tricare. he immediatly said the guy was a quack and cut it down to 100 mg and then took me off. The bad thing is he had me taking up to 700MG a day which the new doc said could have put me in a permanent comma if I would have mixed grapefruit juice or alcohol with it.I found out that 400MG is max use without actually being in a hospital and the max overall dose even there was 600 MG. This nutbag was letting me self administer 700mg. I could have had a stroke if I would have drank a beer with that much in my system went into a comma and never woke up. The Doc told me if I would have continued on the pace the VA had given I would have died in a year. Massive heart attack. The VA had me on high blood pressure medicine and I developed Diabetes from the weight gain. I had a mild heart attack all caused by the trazanoe and the mis prescribing of the other meds. Its a dangerous drug and is overused. After a year my diabetes has gone away I have lost 40 lbs and I am leading a normal life. I was drowzy all day and was a mess. To me this stuff makes a problem out of something that never existed. Stay away from this stuff. It will kill you. If you have PTSD seek other solutions and meet the problems head on a don't be such a wimp. I have through therapy and honesty. It's better then being all doped up all the time and lethargic and fat.

PROS: Knocked me the $@&* out!
CONS: Felt brain dead the entire next day and part of the day after that.

although at a 100mg it did make me fall asleep after 1.5 hours, the next day I felt brain dead. I couldn't get joy out of anything and I had no motivation. It's as if I couldn't think more than 1 or 2 steps ahead of anything...

PROS: Helps with anxiety and sleeplessness
CONS: none

I was prescribed this because my night terrors had returned. Medicine Dr. thinks it is because my AM depression pill (Celexa) wears off by bedtime. I take Trazodone in the PM about 4:30 p.m. I am usually ready to sleep by 8:00 p.m. which is a good turnaround. Since started taking Trazodone i have not had any night terrors. Previous reviewers have mentioned that this drug does have a hangover effect. Their statements are true, but I will gladly endure the hangover effect because Trazodone has helped my symptoms drastically.

PROS: Helped with sleep, relaxed me in the evenings.
CONS: Bad headaches, intense drowsyness, impossible to wake during sleep.

Prescribed in hospital treatment. Not addictive, affordable, and really helps with sleep. Especial calming effect helps with anxiety. Hard to wake up once asleep; early mornings difficult. Over all effect: better rest leaves you in a better state of mind, making it a good choice.

PROS: a little calmer
CONS: very groggy first few days

I was placed on trazadone due to severe insomnia and depression. I had been off meds for a long time because I foolishly thought I could do without them. I have been such a wreck because of that. The first 3 days I was extremely groggy. I had a hard time getting out of bed. Drowsy all day. At night I could only sleep in 2-3 hour increments. And more times than not I could not return to sleep after waking. I eventually had to start taking 2 50 mg tabs at night along with 4 tylenol pm and 2 benadryl to be able to sleep and stay asleep. I have been on it now for 3 weeks, I feel a little better but still having a lot of the intense negative feelings that drove me back to medication in the first place. Note: I am severely depressed and it never seems to go away. I have been hospitalized numerous times for it and also due to self mutilation. And also currently on along with the trazadone, zyprexa and zoloft.

PROS: Helps a lot for sleeping problems, calms down (sort of)
CONS: Grogginess (1-2 strong coffees needed in the morning), difficulty concentrating, effects wears off with time, reeeeaaaally dry mouth/sore eyes

Great med to help solve temporary sleep problems. I started Paxil 10mg and was unable to get more than 2-3 hours of sleep for several days... GP prescribed this, made me sleep 8-9 hours for a few days... Then more 5-6 hours, but still, helps a lot. Stopped when the Paxil "kicked in" but still use it some days where I feel I won't get a good night sleep. Btw, as I said I am on Paxil 10mg and I don't know if the side effects were caused by the Trazodone or worsened by it (from the Paxil)... But definatly, this is a life saver for insomniacs and the side effects are nothing (to me, at least) compared to the benefits of a 6+ hours night. Oh yeah, I switched from Rivotril (clonazepam) to this without any problems (tapered off a few days though, 1mg --> 0.5 mg (4-5 days) --> 0,25mg (4-5 days)). More effective than any benzo I've tried (for sleep problems, that is) and less addictive.

PROS: Slept very well
CONS: Couldn't think clearly

Though it did help me sleep, like it was prescribed for. I wasn't warned about dementia like side effects, which I had.

PROS: gets you to sleep fast
CONS: nightmares, inabilitly to wake from nightmares, grogginess

I was prescribed this medicine to help me get to sleep, but the side effects were too bad. I would have very terrifying dreams and even once I realized I was dreaming I could not wake up. The next morning I would always feel hung over and sore.

PROS: Helped with sleep
CONS: Hangover feeling and took a while to work

It did work well for the purpose- Insomnia- however I'd feel tired all day. Also took a larger dose than I thought have, and gave me a terrible hangover. My own fault I know!

PROS: Helps you fall asleep faster.
CONS: Takes more than an hour to work, sometimes up to 2 hours

I take 100mg for insomnia. Sometimes I have weird dreams but, not scary ones. Using it instead of Zoloft for relief in the daytime. It helps me stay asleep and I am calm during the day.

PROS: Much better than Ambien or any OTC I've ever taken
CONS: Takes a couple of hours to really kick in

Since I've had bad episodes with hyponotics (medicated induced amnesia & hypnotic episodes not knowing what I was doing while awake) very scary. I was offered this medication by my psychiatrist to help me w/ my chronic rythmic movement sleep disorder and insomnia. I wouldn't consider taking anything else at this time in my life. I fall asleep and if I have to get up to go the the bathroom or whatever I have no problem falling back to sleep. Current dosage is 100mg.

PROS: great sleep aid. really helps with anxiety. works well with fluoxetine to fight depression.
CONS: when taken at bedtime, there are none beyond walking like a drunken sailor before fully awake.

I'm currently taking 75 mgs of Trazodone a night right before bed. It has enabled me to get 8 hours of uninterupted sleep each night. I hadn't had that for years. It is also working quite well to alleviate my anxiety disorders, both during the night and throughout the day. My chief anti-depressant is fluoxetine (prozac). The trazodone is enhancing the effects of that medication. The only con I've experienced is quite mild. When first rising, I'm a bit unsteady on my feet. That goes away in a minute or two.

PROS: good for sleep
CONS: no negative if you take right when ready to go to bed

taking trazadone for sleep for over 15 years. I fall asleep but would have trouble staying asleep. This keeps me asleep. Initially,a doc put me on this as a regular antidepressent about 17 years ago - 350 mg in the morning! That was not good - had to sit in a chair for 20 minutes until the room stopped spinning. would only recommend this for sleep

PROS: Effective temporary sleeping aid, withdrawal is easy (unlike benzos and sleeping pills)
CONS: Can be hard to get up the next morning.

Trazodone is very helpful for getting a good nights rest if you are experiencing nightime anxiety. It will make you a bit dizzy and light headed if you try to stay awake on it, however I'm usually knocked out within an hour and those side effects are gone by morning. Nothing bad happens to me if I miss a dose or quit "cold turkey". I can just take it as needed. This was not the case with Xanax which caused me a bit of trouble when I tried to quit. Warning: Don't take any later than 7 hours before you have to get up or you might just sleep through your alarm!

PROS: Effectively treats insomnia
CONS: May have to take it for a long time to stabilize sleep patterns

Trazodone knocks you out in about 20 minutes. Waking up can be a little hassle but when you do, you are so well rested. It also helps treat depression in conjuction with other antidepressants. Bipolar people should be careful so as not to get manic. Mood stabilizers are also needed. This is my experience with Trazodone.

PROS: It made me feel oddly sane when I woke up in the middle of the night. It lowered anxiety levels and improved mood in early morning.
CONS: It didn't help me sleep and I was dizzy when I woke up in the middle of the night. I think I crashed in the middle of the day from it. But, it might have been the problem.

I threw it away instead of taking it. Bleck!

PROS: I take it at night to help me sleep plus the anti depressant effects are helping
CONS: none--no headaches; blood pressure still good on meds prescribed for that

I was in a manic state when I was switched from Xanax at night (wasn't helping me sleep more than 3 hours) to Trazodone. Trazodone allows me to sleep for 6 hours. I don't have any daytime grogginess, but I do take Concerta & Provigil in the morning--both stimulants.

PROS: makes one unconscious so they cannot complain
CONS: excessive drowsiness

this is a great med if you don't have anything to do the first 8 hours of the next day, because your brain is literally fried.

PROS: Good sleep aid, great anti-anxiety aid
CONS: initial headaches - but they go away with time

I take this drug (100mg at bedtime) to cure insomnia caused by abilify. It is a great sleep aid with no daytime drowsiness. What I have noticed during the day is less anxiety and stress, especially at work. When I first started taking it I had some bad headaches, but that wore off in about a week.

PROS: may help relax one enough to fall right to sleep, sort of like a sleeping pill effect
CONS: Only took once, gave me a huge migraine headache and made me feel like I was anesthetized

This medication may help others, but didn't have any positive effects on me.

PROS:
CONS: dizziness, migraine pain, sleepiness

This medication was given under hospital evaluation. This medication effected my blood pressure, causing dizziness. The migraine pain showed up within the first 8 hours (upon waking up the next morning). On top of these reactions to the med, I found that sleepiness was another effect that is caused.....unable to stay awake after taking it.....extremely drowsy. Due to the side effects, I wasn't able to stay on the med long enough to determine is it had any effect on my depression

PROS: puts you to sleep
CONS: makes you excessively groggy

I've tried this one (aka Trazodone) twice. First time, worked great for a long time (if you overlook the walking-into-walls thing when you wake up unexpectedly!). Second time, didn't touch me. I had to pick yes or no, so I picked yes, but my review would actually be a middling "eh."

PROS: excessive sleep
CONS: excessive daytime drowsiness * impaired driving

I was prescribed Desyrel to help with my sleep disturbances for PTSD. I think prescribing Desyrel along with other antidepressants and antianxiety meds is a common practice of psychiatrists. I think doing such intoxicates patients too severely and prevents normal functioning at work and prevents independence (such as driving). I also think other sleep disorders may be overlooked. I had undiagnosed sleep apnea at the time I was taking Desyrel.
