Who came up with this 1 in 6 males anyway??
Between varsity football and the church, the numbers of wholesale rape of males will far exceed that. But statisticians in mental health would have you believe differently. As long as the marketeers of rape and sexual assault counseling persist in drawing division lines among who hurts worse, there can never be steps toward resolution of this GENDERLESS crime against all human nature........ Sorry tried to add the link but I don't have 10 post yet The first sentence reads: Researchers have found that 1 in 6 men have experienced unwanted or abusive sexual experiences before age 18. And this is probably a low estimate, since it doesn’t include noncontact experiences, which can also have lasting negative effects. I'm concerned also with your post. Concerned you are more upset about this than you need to be. I've been there and it's a dangerous place to be. Are you ok? Please seek assistance if your not ok. I and I know others here really care. __________________ Oh Lord It's Hard to be Humble.... |

Hey, homealone,
Hope you get to read this, don't know if you scan your past posts for replies. Well, yeah, I followed your links and read the stats and references and you're right: 1 in 6 is a hard statistic. Conservative. An underestimate, probably. Then we get to your assertion that "As long as the marketeers of rape and sexual assault counseling persist in drawing division lines among who hurts worse, there can never be steps toward resolution of this GENDERLESS crime against all human nature." You're obviously upset and invested in this proposition. Which simply means that whatever the response of someone like me, you'll very likely take it personally. Take it to heart. See anything other than absolute agreement as in some way antagonistic. And I have no reason or desire to be or appear antagonistic. So permit me to make an observation and ask a question from a completely neutral perspective. I think that assertion needs separate substantiation. Apart from the occurrence stats. WHY is the drawing of division lines as bad as you assert? I think I understand what you're saying, I just don't understand the reasoning behind it. Rape and abuse happen to both males and females. As terrible social evils they can either be fought together or apart. Why is it better, or, as you would have it, necessary, that they be fought together? Again, I am not challenging you. I'm just asking for information. Take care! __________________ We must love one another or die. W.H. Auden We must love one another AND die. Ygrec23

I don't know about anybody else, but I CAN tell you - as a male survivor of SA - is that what has become public regarding the Penn State allegations has triggered me terribly. And along with it has come the ANGER and FRUSTRATION and FEAR and SADDNESS & SHAME my history has left me with. It doesn't help when you can't turn on a TV or radio without the case being referred to in excuciating detail!! The only reason I bring that up at all is because the term "varsity football" was used in the originial post... And immediately wondered if part of what's behind that has to do with the anger that SHOULD be felt when thinking about what was done to those kids... Btw, I made the mistake of reading the Grand Jury report. For anybody with a history like mine I would strongly advise you NOT read it... It has ressurected images in my brain I thought had long ago been put to rest...

While I do agree that there has been some good discussion made about this topic, I am also closing this thread at the present. I do believe that it is understood who the 1 in 6 are, and I do think it has made everyone more aware.
Thank you. __________________ Believe you can and you're halfway there.
