I abstained from masturbation from July to December, but I can't say that it had a noticeable effect. From mid July to the end of August strictly nothing happened, from then on I had recurring wet dreams (frequency ranging from 4 days to one month), precisely 11 wet dreams between the 25th of August to the 16th of November. Shortly after I stopped cataloguing because I was sufficiently convinced they had no major impact on my state of mind.

What I did discover was how my diet affected the occurrence of those wet dreams, which I hypothesise are exacerbated by elevated blood sugar levels (especially before going to bed). There would need to be proper tests run to make anything of that though.

My point is, though, it's not so easy to decide or not to masturbate -- your body also has a say in it (for better or worse).

Hey, I don't know if it's right or wrong. Doesn't matter to me; I neither box or masturbate. Or lie.

I don't think I can go more than a day or 2 without it.

I think people assume that because you feel a mounting tension or sexual drive if you don't masturbate for a few days the same tension will continue to climb linearly ad infinitum. That would be absurd. Moreover, if you read online the diaries of porn addicts the vast majority of them go through a period of libido loss (a flat-line if you like) where they are unable to maintain an erection or reach orgasm easily. So no, it's not as hard as some people here seem to think...or maybe I just have naturally low libido.

I think this depends on the source of the tension. Sometimes a person's sex drive becomes very intense because of psychological issues that attempt to relieve pressure or act out through sexual activities/fantasies. When the major portion of the sex drive is perpetuated by psychological issues, then it is very unlikely that a person can hold it back for too long, without it causing more distress or other symptoms to appear as a result. Even with sex addicts who experience a temporary decline in physical desire, eventually the intense libido will return, and probably in a big way. It is natural for the mind/body to cycle up and down, even with addictions and psychological issues. However, most of the time, the sex addict is caught in the grip of his/her addiction, even if their libido is low. The addiction will still manifest in some way.

I can't say I'm able to identify with that, but if addiction is a means of coping with or escaping from something then it's common for one addiction to replace another. In that view it's entirely possible for someone to put an end to his sexual addiction but develop say a food disorder (this particular one is quite common with women I believe).

I agree that one addiction can transform into another addiction, especially if the first addiction is intentionally prohibited from acting out. However, from what I've personally observed, sexual acting out (or the desire to) is extremely difficult to terminate, especially when the psychological source is not resolved. Sex is often the path of least resistance for many issues, since it produces such intense physical and emotional feelings. In essence, the troubled part of the psyche will attempt to collude with the sex drive, to bring an issue to the surface and get it resolved. Unfortunately, this rarely ever works out and usually just causes more problems.

There are psychologists who focus on the sex lives of their patients, and use their fetishes, fantasies and addictions as a means to search for and heal nonsexual psychological issues. Sex is often a doorway into deeper issues.

Arthur Janov, author of The Primal Scream, has done a lot of work in this area. One of his premises is that sexual compulsions are a symbolic acting out of nonsexual issues or wounds from the past. His ideas are fascinating, and I believe there is much truth to them.

Indeed. Masturbation addiction is no different to any other addiction. The longer you go without masturbation the more you don't need it.

Someone who feels they need to masturbate everyday is addicted. If you can't go at least one day without it then you're an addict.

Is it OK though, to do it more than say once daily? Doesn't it affect sperm count or fertility?
