Basic summary
Ended up in hospital Friday (currently Monday) was told I have 5mm kidney stone. Given pain medication and discharged. Seeing a urologist Wednesday. Still in intense pain even with med. Drinking lots of water. Didn't pass stone yet. Looking for others to help explain the process or help dealing with pain. Is it possible to drink too much water? How long does it take to pass? If the stone is in the ureter, why does it hurt around my left kidney, when my right kidney is where it came from? |

I am so sorry for your suffering that kidney stone. I don't know too much about them except that my father had them and my best friend too. Sometimes they can use ultrasound (?) to break up a kidney stone I think.
Not sure why you are having the pain you describe. I know that pain can sometimes radiate to areas away from where one would think the pain would be. People suffering heart attacks often suffer pain in their wrists or jaw. Pain is strange. I am glad that you are in a doctor's care. It is awful that you are having to endure that pain you describe. I drink a lot of water all the time to prevent kidney stones. I asked my doctor about it and she said too much water can cause the body to lose nutritients like vitamins, minerals and such. But I don't know. Perhaps consuming a lot of water is recommended with kidney stones. Since I am not a doctor or medical professional, please do not rely on anything I have written. I hope things will work out and that you will feel better and soon too! |

I see the urologist tomorrow. Hopefully he will be able to help. My research did say about too much water is bad and I decreased my drinking. Mine is too small to justify other methods of breaking up or removing the stone.

I don't know as I can tell you a lot about this. I think some of your questions may be best addressed by your urologist. (I see you have a urology appointment today. Hopefully you'll get answers to your questions there.)
I had a kidney stone a few years ago now. It "hit me" on a Saturday evening when everything was closed (of course... isn't that pretty-much when these things always show up?) I'd never had one before and I didn't know what was happening to me. It was so incredibly painful I could barely sit up in the car while my wife drove me to the emergency room of an area hospital. I don't recall how large the stone was or what medication the ER doctor may have given me. However, I subsequently saw a urologist as well. And the only thing he did was to recommend we wait & see if the stone would dissolve itself (which it did.) I didn't do anything special myself. The only thing I was doing at the time (not related to the kidney stone) was I was in the habit of drinking a glass or two of orange juice each day. And I've sometimes wondered if the citric acid in the OJ had an effect on my stone. But, of course, I don't know and neither did my urologist as I recall.) I do recall that I think I kind-of knew when the kidney stone broke up and was excreted because one day I went pee and it felt like I was peeing gravel! I figured that must have been the pieces of the stone passing through the urethra. After that I was fine. And when I next saw the urologist I was told the kidney stone was gone. Thankfully I haven't had that experience since (and hope not to.) Best wishes for a successful outcome with yours. __________________ "I may be older but I am not wise / I'm still a child's grown-up disguise / and I never can tell you what you want to know / You will find out as you go." I am sorry you are in pain that sounds awful. I am not a medical person but I often find women friend drinking cranberry juice because it creates an acidic urine to prevent UTIs. Not sure if that might help with a stone.
Otherwise I would follow the doctors advice regarding drinking lots of water. __________________ Super Moderator Community Support Team "Things Take Time" |

I saw the urologist last week and had surgery the next day! It was scary, but most of the pain is gone. However, I had an infection so he couldn't remove the stone. He put a Stent in (plastic tube) from my kidney to the bladder. It was painful to pee for a couple days.
Monday I had an office visit with him. He explained everything and said this Friday we will do another surgery to get the stone out and maybe the tube. I don't remember now. All I know if I don't really want to go through another surgery! It's not just the pain afterwards, but it triggered bad memories from a car accident in which I could have gone HOME. |

Update: Had the surgery Friday. I lived, but the after pain is currently the killer. It's not terribly bad pain, though. It is a very sore throat from the anesthesia used along with constant peeing, which has a bit of a sting with it comes out. Ouch! It was bloody pee the first few times, but now it has visibly faded. The surgeon used a laser to break it and remove it. Then he put in a new stent with a small string coming out of the penis. It is annoying and I'm afraid I will pull it which will pull out the stent. Trying to be careful not to touch it or get it caught on anything. My kidney must be working overtime or cleaning itself with all this peeing. I guess that is a good thing.

@ariesmars I am sorry you are having a pain. I think the most reliable information would be to contact the doctor who did the operation or the one you are following up with.

Well, everything is over. Surgery was a success and the last stent was removed Wednesday. A day or relaxing (as best I could) and today I managed to do a little work. I even hovered my r/c helicopter. It's been awhile since I enjoyed any hobbies. Overall, I would say, if you can avoid getting a kidney stone, do it! It is NOT a fun process. Mine was due to a medication according to the doctor.
