I find that I am super sensitive to misspelled words. I can't stand to misspell a word and when a sign or paper I am reading has a misspelled word in it drives me up the wall.
An example is today I had my section 8 meeting and one of the forms I was filling out had a misspelled word on it and I pointed it out to the lady that was interviewing me for my housing. Another example is at the place where I go for therapy there is a sign in the window that you check in at that says something about insurance but it is spelled insurnace and I told the receptionist that the sign had a misspelled word and she said ok I'll take care of it but that was a month ago and it still hasn't been changed and it really bugs me. I can't stop looking at that sign when I am there it's like a train wreck I can't stop staring at it. I don't know if I should mention it to my therapist or not. Anyway does anyone else have this problem with misspelled words? Jan

I don't really have OCD but some misspelled words are just a pet peeve of mine. I know someone who calls themselves "educated" and "intelligent" and has a "high IQ".. yet they do not know the difference between "you're" and "your" or "loose" and "lose". It's not that I'm an ***.. it's just the irony of it.
![]() ![]() ![]() The company I work for seems to have lowered their hiring standards. New people who can't form complete sentences. I mean, my supervisor sent me an email that looked like one big run on sentence and the person couldn't even capitalize the beginning of a sentence or nouns. You know, stuff you learn in grade school. Names of cities have capital letters! It really bugs the hell out of me when it's a "professional" who typed something and doesn't at least know how to use spell check. I don't always have perfect English and sometimes make typos...but at least I don't go around trying to convince people of things like how "educated" I am. ![]() Last edited by MochaFrapPlz; May 04, 2010 at 01:28 AM. |

It is my opinion that spelling is a talent like anything else. I have never had a talent for spelling, in elementary school I would faithfully spend at least two hours a night studying my spelling words and every week I would be disappointed with a C on my test. Before computers I literally had a dictionary in every room of my house because I am very self-conscious about my spelling, therefore I am a bit more sympathetic to spelling errors.
However, I cannot stand errors in usage such age to, two, and too. They really grate on my nerves. And I do expect more in a professional setting. The store in my hometown had “Congradulations Graduates” printed on their paper sacks. Every single time I had to go to the store I would point out the error to the owner. He asked how many times I was going to remind him, I asked how many bags he had left? So I don’t think spelling errors are necessarily an indication of intelligence but I see them as lack of attention to detail.

I type legal papers to earn extra money and I can't stand a misspelled word. I, also, do signs for our office and I make sure everything is spelled correctly. I am quick when reading something I have to sign to check the spelling and I will point out if something is wrong. When something is misspelled in a business and they don't correct it when you point it out, it tells me that they just don't care about things looking the best. To me misspelled words make a bad impression on the business.
