My name is Em and I have been struggling with trichotillomania since I was fourteen. Over the past 8 years it has gotten worse and worse. I used to just pull out hair from my scalp, but since that has gotten noticeable I learned to pull in other areas so no one would really notice. I now pull out hair literally everywhere that hair grows on my body. I have yet to meet or talk to anyone who has the same thing going on as me and was hoping to meet others out there so I don't feel so alone in this.

Hi Em - I've had trichotillomania since I was about 12 or 13, can't remember exactly when I started. I don't know anyone in real life who has it either, this place has been a lot of help as somewhere to talk about it.

Are you in therapy for your trich? I've had therapy a few times for it - after the first time I managed to quit for a year, which I never thought I'd manage! Unfortunately I haven't been able to repeat that since, but at least now I know it's possible. I've managed not to do it for the past week, which is a start...

Em and Rio-
I too have trich and it is impossible to stop. I have had it since adolescence which has been over 2/3's of my life. I am in therapy right now for many things and the one thing that frusterates my therapist the most is that I can not find another coping mechanism. It is such a shameful thing for me and I too have never found anyone that had this problem. Keep writing I would love to keep this post going or else maybe even pm me. We could talk privately, it is so uncomfortable to discuss with people that don't get it.

I'm there too. I even do it with scissors (and try to be artistic).

I have sat at the back of a bus and had the bus full of people twiddling their hair several times
