I have trichotillomania. It comes out in two ways: searching my eyelashes for a loose one and pulling it out (so satisfying) and cutting my hair.
Cutting hair is apparently on the rare end of the Trich spectrum and falls into an obsession with symmetry. When I get down, I start feeling like it is time to cut my hair. Fortunately I am good at it, and look good with very short hair (I'm a woman) and so nobody is any the wiser. The eyelash pulling stopped after I was diagnosed at 38 with Bipolar and went on anti-depressants. |

I'm similar to you in that I cut my hair quite often in order to achieve symmetry. I've been cutting it since highschool (which is a few years back now), but never knew that there was an actual diagnosable hair pulling/cutting disorder until maybe last year.
Its good to know that we're not alone! |

My lashes are the only hairy place I don't pick at.
I keep my hair short as long hair seems to lead to more grease which leads to pimples which of course leads to picking. |

I used to pull my hair a lot more but now some of the meds are helping me stop. I still pull at my eyebrows a lot though.

Oh my.
I used to be a serious trichster. I used to have long hair, but the hair-pulling got so intense that I had to chop it all off. The pulling continued even with the shorter 'do, but eventually I got myself to stop. I've always considered myself "cured" of trichillomania. Kicking it has long been a source of pride. But I'm a serious hair-cutter. I cut every single day...sometimes twice a day. Sometimes (but not often) I'll even do it at work. So what you're saying is that I'm NOT cured after all? Dayum! I'm an absolute idiot for never connecting the two behaviors, but it makes perfect sense. |
