I am posting on behalf of my boyfriend who met with a psychiatrist today who diagnosed him with OCD and prescribed him fluoxetine. Here are his symptoms:
-hearing a voice inside his head that does not sound like it's coming from the outside. he has heard the voice since 4 or 5 years old. the voice "gives" him thoughts and violent images. -frequent headaches, especially when the voice is talking a lot -convulsion "episodes" (I thought he was having a seizure) where he cannot speak but remains conscious -memory loss. he will write and say things that he does not remember doing - a possible incident where the "voice" took control of his body but he is not 100% sure He does not report any anxiety and does not have any compulsive behaviors. His only symptom that seems to fit is the recurring thoughts, which seem to not be his thoughts at all. We are definitely going to be getting a second opinion but does any of these symptoms match what any of you have experience? I personally think this is a misdiagnosis but I am curious about your experiences. |

NO, this does not seem like ocd at all. I'm glad you are getting a second opinion. The closest thing I can see is the recurring thoughts, but usually they are described differently. Intrusive...bad thoughts....I've never heard them described as hearing a voice. I have a bad bad memory, but usually if I see something I wrote down, I remember doing it once I see it...

A second opinion sounds like a really good idea. The only thing that sounds like an OCD symptom to be is intrusive thoughts. If he is having compulsions and poor memory, I would also seek a neurologist as it may be directed to the temporal lobe. Note, I am not a doctor. But when memory loss and convulsions come in, be sure not to sit on it.

Doesn't sound like OCD to me. Intrusive thoughts can be with other disorders as well. The voice thing is what stood out to me. For OCD, it's not a voice. It's more like an urge. Like "i have to wash my hands ten times". As opposed to a voice saying, "You must wash your hands ten times." You know? Its kind of a hard distinction sometimes, but what you are describing doesn't sound like OCD at all to me.

It doesn't sound like OCD to me, for me, like Miswimmy1 said, it's a feeling. Like "I feel like I lost something so I have to check" instead of "You lost something. GO CHECK NOW"
