Is excessive guilt associated with OCD? I feel guilty about things that happened 3+ years ago that were to other people relatively small mess ups and I admitted/apologized etc etc. Even social gatherings when I say something awkwardly or wrong and even stuff from high school (im 22) that was small I remember and feel bad/guilty about. It does not do anything but make me feel bad, and some events I have obsessed about so much now they are worse and like demons because of my obsession. I can relay them over and over in my head and it just makes them real again- like they happened yesterday. I have done this for a long time and the events have changed over the years that are my obsession. Recently it has been something that happened 3 years ago, prior to that it was something that happened 2-3 years prior. And it continuously is on my mind, I can do somethings to make it not be there, but the guilt feeling will come first without even thinking about any event- then I will obsess about the first bad thing that pops in my head and then I will get this overwhelming feeling in my chest to blurt it out, likes its a horrible feeling my chest like I almost lose control. Is that a compulsion? I really don't know what to think about this except that it is so troubling because I cannot change the past and I really have never done anything horrible or bad. I just am not perfect, but I treat my mistakes like they are the most evil horrible things!

Hi! I'm 22 too.Yes, people with OCD often feel an excessive guilt. Have you been diagnosed with OCD? I don't have this symptom...one possible thing to do is to ignore our annoying thoughts, but if it doesn't work for you maybe you could try other methods...have you a therapist who could suggest you something?

this happens to me too! all the time! even if it's for the smallest things! but i don't know if it has a correlation with OCD though...

I get this too, ruminating is part of OCD. I use my CBT to challenge those negative thoughts about myself or use positive affirmations to help me remember everyone makes mistakes and no one is going to remember an embarrassing thing or did I said 3 years ago and that it hasnt affected me long term besides my own guilt. I still get guilt but the CBT and affirmations help with the ruminating.

I have generalized anxiety disorder with panic attacks and ocd. According to 2 therapists I've seen. They did recommend great techniques but nothing lasts long term. I'm going to try what I can it just comes back. I guess I just really want it to be gone. :/
