Fear of uncertainty is one root cause of obsessive thoughts. One could also explain OCD as a mental exercise gone wrong. At high levels of anxiety thinking of something fearful that afterwards can easily be verified as not true, like the house burgled because of an open door, and then confirming the door is indeed locked, may initially be great to calm down, just that then the cyclical thoughts backfire and create new fears.
One could also fight the belief of being a bad person with thinking of something only a really bad person would do, such as pushing someone in front of a passing train, and then confirm to oneself that this is something one would never do... but wait... if I'd never do that, why do I keep thinking of it? And then the thoughts turn OCD.
