FYI I have not been diagnosed with ocd. But my psychologist says they are ocd tendencies and I figured I’d ask here where someone might understand.

I count all the time. Lines, colors, patterns, objects, sounds etc. it’s exhausting and I hate it. I’ve done it for years and never told anyone til this year .it’s so distracting! It really makes me anxious not to count when I feel the urge so I do it and do it over and over again.

Does anyone else do this?

Oh dear thank you for reminding me of this, seriously. Counting was one of my most severe symptoms. I recently went off my two psych meds, prozac and topamax, because my new gp didnt prescribe my topamax, idky. Yesterday i noticed myself counting steps just while walking to dump the garbage. Last night i kept jerking awake. I got out of bed and took some topamax and stopped jerking and finally fell asleep. I guess i still need them.

Oh, yes! Since I was a child. I loved to read and would count the letters in the longer words. Counting, counting....all the things you've mentioned. I do have OCD. I've worked hard as an adult to control the counting and I've had decent success.

I’ve noticed I do more than just count and I’ve known but never put it all together. I also twirl my hair for hours each night. I nod my head over and over til it feels like I can stop. Sometimes I rock and sway bc I can’t stand still-it feels wrong and bad. And the song lyrics omg! There’s more but I’ve kept this all a secret for years

I told my t today and it was a difficult conversation

I get most annoyed when I’m counting like lines or tiles in a room. I also count lines of numbers on a clock off and on all day

I struggle with counting when I wash my hands mostly & in the bathroom to ensure I am dry & clean enough. It is extremely frustrating.

I am not diagnosed OCD either but I found myself developing counting impulses, particularly with hand washing 2 years ago and I'm unable to stop. Although I have been able to reduce some of the counting compulsions naturally, others have been harder to break I find.

Yes, my OCD involves lots of counting and "checking" things......It's very distressing to me, and also very tiring......I'm so sorry you're having problems with this.......I know how you feel.

I also do this thing where I nod my head up abd down. I look ridiculous abd people notice. It’s like I have to do it for whatever reason over and over again.

I'm sorry this is happening to you......Have you told your doctor about this symptom?

I count but I thought it was for reasons related to autism rather than OCD. Who knows. I add numbers up constantly (on license plates for example), count syllables, and try to find words within words. It's like an annoying, never ending game.
