I find it interesting how media never seem to pay attention to this topic!
I've recently found a website that breaks this negative trend: www.oddgirlout.tv.
I really feel that this is an important topic to discuss so please spread the word!

Thanks

Hi Wenda and welcome to the forum. I want to thank you for posting this. You're absolutely right. This is an issue that seems to fall by the wayside all too often. If you have any other resources or websites on this issue, please post them. I'm sure that there are teens and parents of children here that deal with this issue. Thanks again and welcome. I hope you like it here.

I think it's great this problem is finally getting the attention it deserves in recent years.

If only there was the same consciousness about this serious problem back when I was growing up. Oh, how I wish there was. Bullies

I know what you mean, I have noticed that the TV (I don't get to watch much) has had this topic coming up at the end of the news, or maybe I heard it on talk radio, but I firmly agree, there isn't much in the media, I feel there should be, Bullying is so prevalent today and oh so very damaging to our children.
My son from 2nd to 8th grade was a victim, my heart use to break, though he pretended it didn't make him depressed, I knew he was.
His HS years have been great, he was happy that my husband had a job relo, and we had to move.
So far his story has had an upbeat outcome, which in turn has made me happy. Too bad most of his school years have been tarnished, but that is the past, he's happy now, and in Sept will be going to college .
Okay, it just came to me, it was local radio station, talk show, plays local/state news and more schools are planning on addressing this issue with more seriousness, having meetings to educate familis, and the students.
I also think the news said they are strapping down on the penalties the bullies must recieve.
Any parent with a child with a history of bullying, needs to have a therapist evaluate this, it isn't mentally healthy for the child and the victims.
Just my long winded 2 cents.

Please take care,
DE

So do I, so many of us may have not had so many psychological problems as we grew up, and even residual ones in our adult lives.
Let's hope society, and most of all the school systems start working on this, to my knowledge the schools have grown too easy with things, mostly due to parents wanting things less strict than when we went to school. . . hey what's wrong with kids growing up to respect others and public/non public buildings, etc.
Ah, not even to start my "old fashioned", remember when days, ha!ha! Bullies
I'm 48 going on 80, ha!ha!

Take care,
DE

Hi,

What a fantastiac topic. All too often children are scarred for life by bullies who think they have every right to torment some other poor soul.

Children, Tweeners, teens, parents and teachers deperately need to be made aware of this problem.

My parents wouldn't let me take up for myself no matter how many bruises I came home with, so I was easy fodder for the bullies. What sgould hae been horrific turned into a living nightmare.

Thank you again for bringing this to our attention.

January

Roe... That's amazing that your son has grown past the bullying and has found a new much more positive life. And Congrats on his graduation and his adventure into the new life that college brings. I do hope that it's everything he's expecting and more. His story and it's positive outcome speaks volumes about yours and your husbands parenting. All three of you deserve a nice big pat on the back. Truely amazing.

Jan... I'm sorry that you've suffered from this particular type of hell. And the sad thing is that it represents a new chapter in the book of abuse. Child is abused therefore he is hurt. He knows no other outlet for his hurt so like a wounded animal, he lashed out at others... allowing the abuse to continue tarnishing the lives of others. And then the cycle continues. Such a sad book.

I am a survivor of both abuse and bullying. My bullying began the minute I entered school. But when I was 8 a new man came into my life and became my dad. This man taught me to stand up for myself, but that lesson backfired as you can't teach an angry child huw to fight. It only gives them the tools to hurt others. So until I reached high school, every time a bully decided that I was his next victim, I felt that it was my duty and responsibility to teach him a severe lessons that wouldn't soon be forgotten. How the tables turn. Looking back, I see that angry child as "The Punisher." And the new super hero on the block felt it necessary to punish bullies that wanted nothing to do with him. I had learned to "stand up" for myself and for others who couldn't fight back for whatever reason. This only allowed my anger to grow. In a sense I had become a menacing bully in my own way... one of the many events in my life that allowed my anger to take deep root. Interesting how the lessons taught my my new dad came back to bite him in the arse. It wasn't until I reached late junior high school that I learned that standing up for myself and others didn't mean that I had to beat the hell out of bullies. Interesting lesson.

So Roe, I can surely relate to what your son went through. Sorry for the ramble here, but I want to thank Wedna again for this post.

Ry

I should add that I very much hope my previous post is taken as it was meant. I'm not trying to steal any lime light here, but merely describe how the "cycle" I referred to continues from the bully to the victim. Or at least how it did in my life.
