I'm putting this in General Mental Health because it is such a wonderful place for her to have gotten in her life. I wish for all of us that we can come through our pain and trauma and have such an outlook. This excerpt is from her book "Prairie Tale":

However, there are some facts. For instance, I am a twicemarried, now-sober former child actor and mother of four. I acquired those hyphenates by living the way I wanted to or needed to, hopefully with some grace and dignity. I made my share of mistakes, which I think of as the stones I stepped on to get to where I am today, and through luck, hard work, serious reflection, and a desire to face the truth about myself, I ended up at a place where I now enjoy the peace that comes from allowing myself to not be perfect.
Such was not always the case. My mother, beautiful, delicate, and deluded, saw me as the pillar of perfection -- and told me that I was the world's best actor, the best wife, the best...at everything. I knew I wasn't, but I lived my life as though I had to be, lest I disappoint her.
Today, I just want to be my best, and I don't fear disappointing anyone other than myself and my family. I'm in love with a good man, and my children are brave, funny, and compassionate people. I love the lines around my eyes, but I hate the way my cheeks are falling; I'm carrying around an extra ten pounds and enjoying it (most of the time). I suppose I am truly fat and happy.

The stones I've stepped on to get where I am--or for me and others, where we are going. Wow. I don't fear disappointing anyone other than myself... nice, so nice when you get to that point. I hope you can take inspiration from this. This person that a lot of us grew up with, Half-pint, who we looked at as having a charmed life, is just like us, all of us...ups and down, addictions, depression, perfectionism, divorce, fear, hurt. I will definately be reading the rest of her book. This excerpt, just to give my source, is from http://books.simonandschuster.com/Pr...599142/excerpt

thanks I was wondering what her book was going to be like since I saw the tv announcements that she was doing some talk show interviews about it. I used to go to her website after seeing an episode of little house a few years ago but I cant find her site now. Different computer so lost the bookmark for it. It used to be melissagilbert.com. the interview she did on the today show is on msn where she is talking about her mom and the book.

Little House was one of my parents fave shows so I've seen all of the episodes a gazillion times. I liked the excerpt from her book - she sounds like a pretty interesting person; wise in her older years.

I always wondered why you never hear anything about her siblings. Wasn't the little boy who played Willie on the show her brother? What about her (half?) sister, Sara Gilbert? You never hear all of their names linked together -- I wonder why?

I'd like to read her book, I didn't realize she had written one.

Melissa gilberts website is http://www.gilbertboxleitner.com/

on the cast -
"Willie" I dont think he continued with acting.
Sara Gilbert went on acting in the tv show Rosanne as Darlene Conner and then for a while she and melissa did some interviews and shows together for the screen actors guild and specials with Patty duke where sara gilbert and her sister were in a round table discussion about acting and their lives. Sara gilbert continued acting in movies like poison ivy with drew barrymore.
percevil (married nellie) died of aids
Mr. hanson died not sure what of.
Allison Arngrim (nellie has her own website and is active in aids fundraising and other causes http://www.hgd.com/alison/
Ssidney and linsey greenbush (carrie) have their own website http://www.greenbushtwins.com/
charlotte stewart (miss beatle) has a website that is currently under construction http://www.liquidbutterfly.com/

Thanks for all the cool links! For some reason I never remember that authors and celebrities more often than not have websites (LOL).

I have some info too:
-- I knew Sara was "Darlene" on Roseanne and that she's been in a few movies. I actually saw her in an episode of Law and Order a few weeks ago - I think it was the SVU version.

-- The guy who played Mary's husband Adam was the creator of Malcolm in the Middle - the show is loosely based on him as a child genius.

-- The kids who played "Andy" and "Albert" are brothers, I've seen "Andy" on JAG - he had a regular role in the show. I'm not sure about the dark-haired one.

Cool! Thank you all. These were child stars that didn't ruin their lives!! Even when Melissa Gilbert got in with the Brat Pack and abused alcohol, she at least straightened things out.

(LOL) -- Isn't it weird that a lot of the time we can remember the character's names but not the actor/actresses names that played them? There is a handful that I can remember, but others are doomed for eternity to be "Whitey from Leave it to Beaver", "Dewey from Malcolm in the Middle", "Ben from Growing Pains", "Rudy from the Cosby Show", etc.
(LOL) - At least they are remembered, even if it's not by their real names!

yea I agree weird. I also think it really doesnt matter whether melissa gilberts book is good or hated by others it will be memorable just because it was her that wrote it. lots of people will say they like the book and lots of people will say they hate it but most people tha thave read it who have seen little house will remember it either as melissa gilbert wrote a book or they will remember the girl who was laura ingalls wrote a book. funny it works.

I apologize, this is sort of off topic again but Amanda reminded me of something.
I used to check the Little House books out constantly at my elementary school library. Then when I was in third grade, my furry little brain realized there was a tv show based on the books. Problem is, I could never keep it straight that "Laura" was played by a little girl named "Melissa". I would look at the book, it said written by Laura Ingalls Wilder - watch the show, the little girl's name was Laura Ingalls. I drove my poor mom crazy - she just couldn't make me understand that the girl on the show didn't write the books!

I love biographies -- people's lives are always interesting to me, especially people like Melissa Gilbert because I've watched her on tv my whole life.

Oh yeah, I remember now -- Andy and Albert were played by Andy and Patrick La---
b--teoux. (Don't have a clue how to spell their last name, won't even try, LOL)

Wow...This is so inspirational. I hope to get to where she is someday.

That passage has really hit home with me, I find myself thinking about it a lot because it is so very inspirational. I'm glad others have enjoyed it, too.
