One of my all time favorites - "What About Bob". Not only hysterically funny to most who watch it, but with him having panic, anxiety and OCD helps those of us suffering from any of those disorders see a 'lighter side' of ourselves ! Neat thread JMo !

Girl Interrupted and Forrest Gump are my favourite films ever.
[edit] - I'll definately check out the other films too. I remember seeing The Other Sister when I was little, but i don't remember it too well.

There is a John Cusack movie about DID called "Identity ", that is very interesting dealing with him intergrating his alters. It's kind of disturbing though. But an interesting movie. It is a horror movie so just a heads up.

Abandon is another good movie. I'm not sure what disorder it deals with though. She kept saying her ex boyfriend who disappeared years ago was back and stalking her (he wasn't, but I'd give the story away if I said why).

"Lost in Translation," one of my favorite movies, isn't specifically about mental illness, but it speaks to me on many levels because it is about a state of mind that I've felt frequently as a result of my bp -- a sense of being lost, displaced both physically and emotionally. This dissociative feeling of being utterly out of sync with the society around you and not having a clue as to how to reconnect -- in addition to the superb acting by Murray and Johansson -- really drew me to it when I first saw it. Oddly, I associate it with my suicide attempt last June, as I watched it over and over again when I was released. I had asked a friend for a movie with no violence, and that's what she came up with. Good taste. Cheshire Cat

thnx Jen for this post ... I had wanted to get Tarnation, but forgot because I was waiting for so long for it to come on dvd...so today I think I'll go rent it.

It was the Winner of Best Documentary for National Society of Film Critics and the Official Selection at Sundance, Cannes, New York, and Toronto.

I heard a lot about it on other web sites ...so thanks Movies about Mental Illness

Here's one that's not well know-- called " An Angel at My Table ". It's a biography of Janet Frame ( 1924-2004)- a talented author that lived in New Zeland. She was mis-diagnosed with schizophrenia- and spent time in a psychiatric hospital. What a life she had! I believe the film was made in Australia?? not sure--- be prepared if you plan to watch it... it's long!

Yes Monty, I know which movie your talking about by I can not remember the name of it. It is very "disturbing" but does have a story line and takes you inside of his head. Thanks for mentioning it. I will try to figure out the name of it.

Wow you guys. Thanks for your replies. I think all of us now have some movie watching to do and then perhaps a long discussion. LOL

I also forgot to mention "The Butterfly Effect". Ashton Kutcher stars in it. Its a really good movie and I also can not remember which mental illness it deals with. But definitly worth renting.

Also, "The Secret Window". Another good one. Starring Johnny Depp. It has some violence so thats a heads up. I am glad you guys enjoyed this thread. Someone actually gave me the idea.

Two classic films about psychiatric institutionalization and psychosurgery are "One Flew over the Cuckoo's Nest" (1975) and "Frances" (1982).

Parenthetically, I have yet to view a film with which I can identify as an accuately protrayed depiction of psychotic mania and excrutiating painful major depressive episodes endured by Bipolar I individuals like myself. Although I have seen a few woefully lame attempts in made-for-tv films.

I picked up Cuckoo's Nest at the library tonight.

What Dreams May Come is one of my 14-y/o daughter's favorite movies. I thought it would be too dark and disturbing for her, but she loves it.

Jen, I totally forgot how it ended. The scene that I remembered most was the one with Billy, and it wasn't nearly as gruesome as I thought it was the first time I saw it.

My favorites are Girl Interuppted, Rain Man, I am Sam, Charly ( I can identify with him a whole lot), Shining, and I loved Riding the Bus with my sister. I normally don't like very many T.V. movies but loved this one.

I have a hard time w/Monk. I've watched it a bit and I can't help but just feel so sorry for him. One episode he was being mocked by a comedian in a club and Monk could absolutely not extricate himself from the situation. It was painful to watch. gg
