I think all animals, not just cats, are sensitive to moods and illness. In my opinion, cats are very intuitive.

A lot of studies have shown that just being around animals lowers blood pressure & respiration, brings a calmness to the body, relaxes brain activity. Having a beloved pet nearby can speed recovery time for things like heart & back surgery... There are some dogs that are trained to detect cancer & seizures... My snakes seem to know when they just need to be still & drape across my shoulders or rest on my head vs. when I'm ok w/them racing for the floor...

I don't know if it is true, but I feel our pets, rather canine or feline, sense when we are depressed, angry, and anxious.
I think they sense it by our tone, our touch and maybe even scent, though our noses can't smell as keen as animals, we give off different scents according to emotions, its just as well us humans don't possess (sp?) their keen sense of smell, ha!ha!
I don't know about you, but have you noticed how our pets will come alongside us while we are crying?
All the dogs I have ever owned or should I say owned me, seem to sense if I was sad and/or crying, it is amazing how they pick up on this and almost seem to come to console us.
Maybe it is an instinct? I have no idea, but it is heartwarming to know how loyal they truly are BIG QUESTION ABOUT CATS.
The love of a pet, to me, is the greatest thing. BIG QUESTION ABOUT CATS.
Take care,
DE

I have a cat and two loving dogs.
My little three pound Yorkie licks my aching parts! I think she senses when I'm hurting physically. My cat, well, he saved my life, literally....but that's a long story!
Animals are very sensitive!!!

probably most cats do sense when a human is ill, especially if the human isn't always ill

I have 4 cats and I would say a big yes. Some cats more then others I think. One of my cats will follow me around the house if I'm very depressed and sleep with me or lay beside me. Another one will stick close as well, just not as close as the other does.

I definitely think so! One of my cats (Suki, our youngest) is like, one of my best friends...I swear, she knows when I'm really hurting and she'll jump up on my lap or do something funny or cute when she senses that I'm sad.
