I never thought I'd do this, and I've always resisted the idea, but today I applied for a job with a large accountancy firm that has a diversity hiring policy. So at the end of the on-line application there was a questionnaire about belonging to underrepresented groups. In their definition of disabled, they included psychiatric conditions. And part of their definition of disability also was that it was something that would require work accomodation. Since I do require flex time to accomodate addictions aftercare and time off once a month to see my pdoc, I decided to answer the question yes.

I don't know if it will help or hurt my application. It just felt very strange to do, since I don't consider myself disabled.

I can understand your feelings on this. You don't FEEL disabled. And I don't think it's a bad thing that you mentioned it, especially since they asked for that on the application. In fact, I think it's great that you told them your needs and accomodations, so they know you're up front an honest. A good employer should commend that!

Sending good thoughts that you get the job!!!!

Splitimage!

That is so brave and I hope so very liberating! I hope this is the example others need to step forward and not be afraid or ashamed that they are disabled in any way!

You really have made my day I am so proud of you. I know I don't really have that right to be, but you have no idea how it made me feel.

It made me feel that there is hope for me out there regardless of age or disability, and I really want to thank you for that,

THANKS!!

If you're qualified to do the work, and they can accommodate you easily (though they shouldn't get away with it if not) then you might simply get the job because of the diversity! Good wishes on this!

I know, I keep trying to forget I'm disabled.
