Hey everyone, I don't post here often enough. Everyone seems so kind... However when I started having this issue, I knew just who to turn to :P

So here it is. I'll try and keep it short.

I keep forgetting my own age? I mean, I'm twenty two years old. It just seems really strange to me, and kind of awkward when I tell someone I'm a year younger than what I really am. I know a lot of people don't put much mind into their age, but to literally forget? I've had to actually recalculate from my birth date to see how old I was (whether I was off by a year or so).

I don't have any severe mental illnesses, but I did struggle with horrible depression a few years ago, and I'm constantly stressed/anxious. Do you think it's the stress that makes me forget? or maybe because I try to will myself into forgetting the last few years, that I forget my age as well?

Or am I getting weirded out for now reason? lol. Any tips would be appreciated.

Hi SammiSama

It's possible there is nothing wrong. From birth to the age of 21, it is a never ending series of positive milestones all lumped together. We not only count our years, but sometimes count our months in anticipation of the next step toward adulthood.

Once you've reached 21, the world is pretty much your oyster - you're old enough to do what any other adult can do. There is no need for a countdown to your next birthday, and no real need to remember your exact age - especially when you have so many other numbers in life to remember.

Maybe you're just overwhelmed by math.
Thanks for this!

I hear what Kathy says.
Is it only around your age? Depression can cause major issues with memory loss, as I have experienced first hand - and I'm hardly older than you. It is frustrating and embarrassing.

medications, stress, mental disorders and medical problems all affect how the brain functions. my suggestion contact your treatment providers. they can help you discover why you are having memory related problems.

I always have to do a quick mental calculation, when someone asks how old I am. I've just always been like that.

Do what I do, dear. Pick and age you like and stick with it. Just a joke. I am seriously bad with numbers, dyscalcululic as well as a terrible speller (and recently told this is probably due to an old head injury, maybe prenatal) and my own age does not come gliding easily off of my tongue. But from what I hear, I'm not the only one who has this quirk and I never really worried about it before either. That's why you are never supposed to ask a lady her age, anyway!
