"...It's well known that a small subgroup of soccer fans engages in violent behaviour on a regular basis. But if you have a friend who is a soccer fan, it tells you nothing at all about his propensity for violence. And even if he gets into a fight during a game, his interest in soccer will not explain why..."

Violent soccer fans might better be understood by group psychology/sociology than by whether they like soccer. I don't know that we need to "explain" violence but I believe understanding an individual or group who is/are violent's psychology, whether it be normal/abnormal or not, can be very helpful.

Well god bless Peter McKnight, Vancouver Sun. with that informative article. me thinks many ppl will pass over it. the stigma of mental illnesses goes onward.
i don't know if the shooter will be diagnosed as MI but it is irresponsible for the professionals and the public at large to make a diagnosis. it's like MI is the catch-all phrase for any abberant behavior. i'm bipolar and get ticked when someone shoots at a bunch of ppl and the media says he may be bipolar or on anti-depressants. i don't go around shooting ppl because i'm bipolar and don't know anyone who has!!! it continues to cause me to protect my dx with ppl cause there's a horror in ppl's eyes when bipolar is mentioned. like we should be put in cages and gawked at by paying customers.
i don't believe soccer fans or hockey players are more violent either. maybe it's just too much tetesterone!

Honestly. Let them come gawk at me, and it would be a waste of good money and time. How interesting can it be to watch me eat, sleep, knit and get intensely irritated at them from time to time? Let's Dance has a more interesting jury.

Would someone please pin a medal on Peter McKnight? Finally someone in the media pointing out that mental illness does not equal violent behavior.
Thanks for this!
