Glasses! I HATE glasses. I don't like the way I look in them and they give me screaming headaches. So why did I let the lady at Lens Crafters insist I buy a "back up pair" for $260?

She had them adjusted just fine, but they made my head hurt after a short time and I got nausea-inducing headache close to a migraine. I go back and she's gone so a different girl adjusts them and now they're too loose and fall down my nose and still give me a headache.

They didn't have my contacts in stock, so I have to deal with these for a week until they come in.

When I said my head hurts from the glasses, she and two other workers looked at me like I was speaking a foreign language and said that shouldn't happen.

Well, every time I wear glasses, my head gets squeezed where the bows make the turn to go down the back of my ears, and causes a headache that makes me want to unscrew my head and throw it away. I've never had glasses that didn't do this.

And my eyes aren't centered in the frames, my eyelashes stick out the tops and the top of the frame almost cuts off the top of my eyes, aesthetically speaking. I'll be damned if I'm going to drive the 30 miles to have them adjusted back to how they were just so they can continue to give me a headache.

Know how you feel in so many ways. I had an appt at the opticians yesterday and it looks like I might not be able to wear contacts any more at all. A big part of that, I'm sure, is down to my meds which I blame for making my eyes "extremely dry" to quote my optician. I have to wear my glasses all this week (fortunately they don't give me headaches like yours do) and then try to see if I can be refitted for contacts next week.
HOpe you get your glasses sorted. It took a good optician to fit mine - but I know it can be done.

I'm ready to throw them in the garbage. I can't see without them. I can't wear them. The pair of contacts he gave me aren't the right fit so they give me a headache too. Of all places, I thought LensCrafters could get it right. I can't do my job if I have migraines and can't see. This sucks. I'm really pissed.

Glasses are a facial appliance that fits on your head, that has to squeeze your head in order to stay on your face, so how can they possibly say that they can't cause headaches. Maybe I should put a vice on their freakin heads and crank it up and tell them they're imagining the headache they're getting.

I have talked to a few people that say that they would never go back to lenscrafters again. Sears is another one.

I hope you will be able to be recompensed for your trouble!

Aw man! You were so excited about them yesterday!

You totally get a warranty on those if you're not happy. Bring them back, have them try to adjust them, but if they really hurt your head, they WILL take them back.

I'm looking in their catalog, and all of the frames fit the way mine do, where there's more space below the eye than above it, one even has her eyelashes poking out the top. The pair I really liked gave me a shadow that looked like I had a V-shaped unibrow.

But they all give me headaches. Sunglasses don't give me headaches, so what's the deal?

shirl, i've had several pairs of frames that did the exact same "vise" action to my head. right behind my ears. they do cause headaches.......take them back. you have a warranty and if you charged them, you've more power.....so take them back. it's hell to not be able to see without them and have a headache with them...........

It's totally the vise action. They can adjust or give you your money back. Those are their only two options -- don't take No for an answer.

i've had glasses that caused small knots behind my ears. i always went back.........kick some ***, woman!

K. I have to go back anyway. The reason I went there yesterday was because Alex's contacts came in, and then we'll all spaced them off.


I'm wearing the not quite right contacts right now. I can see and I'm not getting a headache (knock wood).

I have problems with glasses too. When I was young all my glasses came from a family friend who was an optician. He used to spend a lot of time fitting them correctly. I don't think the major chain stores are willing to spare the time to fit glasses properly, and I doubt if the employees there are trained to really do it correctly either.

You can also get a headache not only from the "pinch" but if the glasses aren't centered properly... that is, not the way the frames are centered on your eyes but that the optical center of the lens is centered properly on your eye... which is determined by the way the frame sits on your face and that the lens is ground down correctly to fit your frame. Our optician friend used to let me come in the back and watch how the process was done.

Nowadays I have the same trouble with the local outfits. My latest pair I could not get not to hurt so I gave up on the shop and ended up bending them myself... Not something I'd recommend but I think I lucked out because they now fit fine with no trouble.

I'd recommend trying to find a local optician... they may not have as large a variety of frames but they may be trained better to fit the glasses properly. There is a possibility maybe they can even take the glasses you got at lenscrafters and fit them for you if you ask.

Properly, frames really should be fitted to your head and ears for a comfortable and firm fit. It seems like the only thing they do at the big chain stores is bring the ends in to tighten them (which causes pinching) or bend them out to loosen them. "Too tight? Too loose? Just right?" which isn't really proper. I've never seen them adjust the position where the hook bends down to fit your ears, or the shape of the temple to hug your head properly. But if you can find someone who will do that I'd bet it would help tremendously.

In fact, my childhood optician used to adjust them by putting them on my head, standing over me, and seeing how they fit my head and ears, and continually making adjustments until they fit properly. At the chains, you just tell them how they feel, pass them back to the person over the counter, and they bend them. So they aren't really fitting them, just bending based on your "too tight" or "too loose" comments.

If the pinching continues to be a problem they also make alternative styles or frames... for example you can get frames where at the point where the temples hook your ears, instead of "pinching" for a firm grasp, the hooks are made of a very flexible bendy wire that hooks around the back of your ears to hold them on that way. Maybe a pair like that would give you more relief, or see what other options they have.

There is a local optician in my neighborhood -- really old shop; seems to have had the same storefront display for at least 30 years, all dusty. They have one of those old backlit interchangable-letter signs in their window, and it says "we promise to take more than an hour to make your glasses"

I didn't even want the darn glasses, but she was a tough sell. Then she convinced me to use the $20 off coupon for a pair of sunglasses, that ended up being $50. I don't pay that much for sunglasses because I'm so hard on them. She assured me I'd never want to take them off because they're so nice. Pffft, whatever. Those are getting returned for sure.

it might be the weight of the lens themselves. because of the thickness of the lenses and the difference in my eyes (one far sighted one near sighted one astigmatism) using glass lenses makes the set weight close to a pound (for those who have trouble thinking in pounds like I do for an idea of what this feels like put a pound package of hot dogs on the bridge of the nose) anyway so I cant have glass lenses I have to have plastic and also if there is a great difference in the two lens prescriptions that can also cause headaches, this can be helped with having the optical agency do something called sluff off . They did it to my glasses and I no longer have achey ears and head from the weight and the world doesn't look tilted when I look down or to the sides without moving my head.

I just ended up returning them for a full refund. I've always gotten plastic lenses and they don't weigh a lot. I'm just super sensitive to having glasses on my face. If they weren't squeezing my head, they were falling off my face, or putting too much pressure on the bridge of my nose. I told her I didn't need to pay $300 to give myself daily migraine headaches.
