I have this really old friend. Recently he relayed to me that he doesn't like leaving his home for more than 24 hrs at a time. From the way that he described it iit sounds like he is actually afraid to. Is there terminology for that and could this be a phobia or just a personal quirk?

Is he fine leaving the house, if it's under 24hrs? If a persons afraid to leave the house anytime, this is called agoraphobia. Maybe he's worried about the house catching on fire etc.

Doesn't sound like that. From what he told me this is something that has occurred from childhood.

Does he say why he doesn't want to leave the house? It might be social anxiety if he wants to avoid being around people.

i agree re agoraphobia even tho it's different from mine. it sounds like he doesn't feel safe being out of his home altho he will do it for 24 hours. if it stems from childhood i'd ask him if anything occured then that was troubling for him to be gone.

Agoraphobia can manifest itself differently in anyone who suffers from it. Bob may be able to leave his house, as long as he doesn't go more than 5 miles from it. Sarah, on the other hand, might not be able to take 1 step out of her house, or even open a door or window without anxiety. And then this friend of yours just has where they cannot leave the house for more than a specific amount of time, 24 hours. Just because it doesn't sound like someone else's agoraphobia experience, doesn't mean it cannot be agoraphobia.
