I was talking to a woman about some of my issues and she shared with me that her mother in law had shock treatments when she was pregnant 51 years ago. It relates to some problems her husband has, physically and emotionally. She wondered what could all the possibilities be for having them, especially being pregnant. Would anyone know the reasons or how to find out?

Im shocked that the mother in law had that child who became the husband after going through ECT. even just 51 yrs ago they knew ECT causes fetal death and miscarriage. especially since back then they didnt have the safety standards surrounding ECT that they have now. its a mircal he was born let alone grew up and became a husband.

the questions - theres no way anyone other than the husbands doctors can answer those questions. only his doctors know his history, how he survived in the womb, what problems he was born with, what problems he encountered as he grew up and all that stuff.

how to find out the answers - the husband needs to talk with his doctors and release all his files and reports about his birth and growing up, school documents and any files of doctors and tests he has has through out his life so far, and then he will need to take many physical health and mental health diagnostics. once everything is done his doctors can tell him what his functioning (GAF) is, what his IQ is and what his mental and physical problems are and whether they come from his fetal development after his mom had the ECT or not. then if he wants his mother and wife to know the results he can tell them.

She should be asking the psychiatrist directly. I had a consult for ECT and after asking the doctor all my questions based on my current life situation, it was determined not to be in my best interest - the biggest obstacle for me was I needed someone with me 24/7 for six weeks.

She was never able to get pregnant and wonder if that had anything to do with it, some internal deformities had been founf through the years. I`ll talk to her, give her the site. Her husband and mother in law won`t talk about it, but it`s driving her nuts. Thanks for the info. It is interesting.
