for clarification i'm listing this in this forum for a reason. at work everyone was using melatonin to sleep better. i was cautioned by my pdoc re my using OTC products unless i checked with him first. i'm bipiolar among other things. i started taking the melatonin too cause it was from a health food store so no worries re checking with pdoc. WRONG. i won't get into what happened but to say i had a mood swing from hell and i became sui..dal. it was the result of my taking the melatonin. so thought i'd post this for your discretion eating these brownies.

The Food and Drug Administration has issued a warning letter to Baked World, a Memphis, Tenn., company marketing brownies laced with melatonin. The FDA notified this company that their product, first called "Lazy Cakes" then renamed "Lazy Larry,"...

Thanks for posting that,Madisgram. My husband who works nights has taken Melatonin for years with no problems, but when I tried it just a few times, I experienced terrifying nightmares.

My pdoc is the one who told me to take melatonin, because all the rx sleep meds didn't work. I take 6mg most nights and on occassion i take 9mgs. I actually sleep now. Just like with rx meds, herbs and such work differently in different people.

I'm wondering what other foods are adulterated with it. Maybe it's not the chocolate that hypes me up, but melatonin IN the chocolate.

Wingin'it; I'm pretty sure chocolate doesn't have melatonin in it. The problem is these brownies that have had melatonin added to them, that are sold and purported to be "relaxing" which contain melatonin, because it is not controlled by the FDA, and could cause medical problems for people who are not aware they contain melatonin. I saw a news story on Youtube about them a while ago, when a mother reported it because her children had bought them at a convenience store without realizing what was in them.

Caffeine is the culprit in chocolate that gets you hyper. And sugar as well, depending what kind of chocolate you're eating. Melatonin makes you sleepy, or so the producers of it say. Since it is not under FDA jurisdiction, no one has had to prove whether or not individual products have a clinically significant positive effect in order to sell it, because there is no government agency testing or regulating it. This is true of all herbal supplements and remedies, which is why they are sold over the counter and not by prescription.

Thankfully some places are trying to change laws about selling this kind of stuff, because it is a really lucrative industry that is not only bilking people blind with stuff that doesn't work, but also preventing people from seeking actual medical treatment because they believe the claims on the packaging.

Roxiesmom333; This may explain your nightmares.

Buttrfli42481; Yes, products like these can be really iffy due to improper testing, and because of the way they are produced in the body, and the delicate balance of each individual when it comes to hormones. It's difficult to predict how any individual will be affected.

Thanks for this. I take 3mg of melatonin every night because I have to get up early for work and the anxiety keeps me awake, sometimes for hours.

Hmmm, two thoughts on this. If these cakes were indeed sold alongside Twinkies and other snack cakes w/o a large warning sticker, I'd expects lawyers and insurance companies will be involved at some point.
The other thought is...I'm a little surprised that the FDA took any action at all. The company baking the cakes must be a very small company
One last thought...I have no opinion on Melatonin but to get my chocolate they'll have to pry it from my cold, dead, chocolaty fingers
