My brother has a serious emotional/ mental illness. I am looking to determine the best way I can help him. He has agreed to see a psych counselor for evaluation and treatment. However, he does not have much money. I was thinking of having a family intervention with him, my siblings, and his wife, but I think it would be best to have a professional mediate the meeting. I am unsure of the best steps proceed with helping him. I fear that he is a danger to himself or others as he has an explosive anger issue. Can someone guide me to a guide or program to help me begin? Also, if there are any organizations that offer free/low cost Psychiatric Care, please let me know. We live in Suffolk County, Long Island in New York. Thank you.

If he has anger issues I wouldn't try spring an intervention on him, even with a professional present. It could easily get messy and make things worse. I think you should just straight up ask him about the money and see what he wants to do, maybe throw the idea of family helping out there. But make sure he knows.

By the by...that number for the Mobile Unit is confidential, and will not do anything you do not want them to do. They protect your anonymity, and are very supportive. They may help you decide the best course to take with your brother.
He may want to call them...really good people. He can talk to them; and they will not do anything he would be uncomfortable with. Really Really!!! For you: Samaritans212-673-3000 (positive affirmations, just an ear to listen to you...no action taken!! No Prayer!!) Last edited by Anonymous32463; Dec 08, 2011 at 07:11 PM. |
