So, how do you go about telling a new romantic interest about your illness?

I'm bipolar and have spent near on 4 months in a mental hospital, but recently been enjoying getting to know someone. The problem is she has only seen the good side, and although I know I can control things I'm worried she will struggle to understand. She also has 2 young kids, so understandably would be cautious.

Any ideas?

When you're just sitting around chatting, why not ask her if she's ever heard of BiPolar disease, and even if she has, explain to her exactly what it is -- and afterwards tell her that you have it. If she knows what it's all about, perhaps she won't be so afraid or cautious about it. People are afraid of what they don't know and most people don't read up on stuff that they don't have.

I should't think it would make any difference once she understands. It's worth a try. Best of luck & keep us posted! Hugs, Lee
