Today my mother called and explained to me that at my nephews (2 month old) appointment this morning they discovered a very serious heart murmur, they are also very concerned about this strange bump that is penetrating outside his gut.

I'm very nervous that something awful could be happening inside this cute little baby's body. I don't quite understand what a heart murmur is, I think I need to do some research to understand.

My sister, his mother, is not concerned about this situation. She is leaving for Maryland in a couple days and wants to cancel all his X ray and Heart specialists appointments till she gets back from Maryland. I wonder how she can not be concerned because if I discovered my 2 month old had a murmur and a lump in his gut I would be freaking out and demanding X rays immediately, I'd also cancel my trip in a heart beat. I don't understand her, I'm scared to think that maybe meeting some guy in Maryland is more important that her baby.

I'm just totally scared right now. I decided to take him while she goes on her trip and take him to all his appointments. The heart specialist appointment is in Bluefield (January, do you happen to know how far away that is from me?). I'm also taking him to get X rays this Friday early in the morning. I hope I don't have a problem getting his medical information released to me.

Good for you, Desirae... BUT make sure you get a SINGED CONSENT from your sister so that you can have the baby attended to medically!!!

A heart murmur most often is that one of the valves of the heart doesn't close all the way. The "murmur" is the sound of the blood going back into the bottom chamber. The vavle between the two chambers doesn't close and allows the blood to flow back. It CAN be dangerous!

Only X-rays will tell you what that bump in his gut is all about. Maybe a hernia?

I'm not one for violence, but I think your sister needs a swift kick! Sounds like she may be in denial. Baby's heart murmur and stomach

Those are all very serious, IMO! And your sis is not concerned? Cancel his appointments? What is she...crazy????

You do what you can to get this precious baby some medical attention and get him to his appointments.

P.s. to above, call your pediatrician and ask them what a document would need to say so that you could seek medical care and make medical decisions for the baby. It should be worded correctly and probably notarized.

This baby is very fortunate to have you around to get him the medical help he needs. I hope there is nothing serious but you won't know until he is checked out thoroughly. You might call the Dr. and find out what all documents you may need prior to your sister leaving. I am glad you are there for your nephew.

Des,

I can't remember just where you live. Let me know and I'll do a Mapquest for you and send you the directions.

Hugs,

Jan

Elijah had his X rays early this morning. The Doctor did not comment on the X ray photos, I assume they will call once they have a good look. I'm really nervous that they didn't say anything at that moment. My biggest fear (which hopefully is a exaggeration) is cancer or something. OMG.....I think everything will be fine I'm just waiting for them to call my sister and for her to call me, hopefully that will happen today.

He goes to the heart specialist next week.

Desi, the technitians aren't allowed to say anything about the results of the X-rays. They have to study them and then they give the results to the patient's dr.

I would have thought that they would check out the heart first. Hmmm...

So you got your sister to reconsider? Good for you if that's true.

Keep us posted, ok?

Many babies are born with a heart murmur. I was born with one and still have a slight one now at the age of 33. It's good that he's going to the heart specialist. I would say that they will do an ultrasound of his heart to see the murmur. Then they will know more.

Good Luck, I hope everything goes well.

Des,

Do you think you could possibly talk your sister into letting you adopt the baby? He needs a responsible parent.

Hugs,

Jan
