I don't know how many of you have heard the story of Carolyn Thomas. she has been on several Morning News shows and also Oprah. She is a woman with great courage. Her crazed ex-boyfriend killed her mother. Then, he shot her in the head, leaving her a woman without a face. Her right eye, cheekbone, nose and upper jaw destroyed. She testified at his trial and he is in prison. She has undergone numerous surgeries to try and repair her face.. She lives here in Waco, TX

I have talked to my kids about abuse and that it isnt only children that get abused.. That it happens to grown ups as well, but I never went into great detail about it. Well this past Friday, My son went with my mother-in-law to take her new puppy to the vet. he told me this story from his point of view He is only 8 years old. He told me on the way home, Momma do you know abou that lady that got shot in the face by her boyfriend? I looked at him and said yeah I know about her why? Thinking that it was a very strange question for him to be asking me. He then said did you know that her boyfriend also shot her momma and she died? I was like yeah i knew that too. He said well I got to meet her today at the vets office! I was beside myself. I asked if he talked to her and he said a little, but mostly it my meme that did the talking. He then started asking me question about why the boyfriend did what he did? Of course I dont have all the answers for that, but i answered them the best i could.
She was, for the first time since the shooting, without her bandages... she had just been to a hospital in Houston getting corrective surgery, one of many she has had to have.
Seeing her like that made my son really sad and angry... He couldnt understand how anyone could do that to someone... I was fighting back tears..

any ways I know this should probably be in the survivors forum. Just thought i would share my son's experience.

(I had to correct some spelling mistakes... dang i hate those)

it was very hard trying to explain it to him to where he could understand. Not that anyone can really understnad why someone does what they do, but you know what I mean, hopefully

Mel, I think you did just great under the circumstances of totally not expecting what you son was going to say, not to mention his questions.

It is so very difficult to explain the pain of life to our little one's. I believe you kept a level head and handled it very well.

Having said that, my thoughts to this woman and her progress.

Crying isn't a sign of weakness. It's a sign of having tried too hard to be strong for too long.
