I'm starting to work through the Courage to Heal workbook and need to broaden my support group. I'm looking for a support group in the North Atlanta area for s*xual ab*se survivors or for DID/MPD. Can anyone help?

Medical centers (most) have a Behavioural Health dept.(s) and can direct you to a counselar within the area, or even check with your county, there are counselars and support groups for what you are talking about.
Some are even free or near, according to your income.
Lots of luck with your quest.

Elizabeth,

You might want to E-mail NAMI-GA@nami.org for specific locations and times for support groups in your area.

Also, here is a good resource list for Georgia. Click Here...

Hope you find something!

Thank you, bebop, for the welcome! I am actually enjoying being a part of this online community already and feel that I should also join a group that meets irl.

Petunia, thank you for the lead with NAMI and with the Georgia specific resources. I searched on Yahoo, but must not have put in the same search phrase.

Check with your local Domestic Voilence agency and Rape crisis centers. They both deal with sexual assault and always have groups running.

As for groups for DID for that you will need to go through mental health agencies. Groups that deal with specific mental disorders almost always needs to have a mental health professional on location. for safety reasons for example you can have only two people who are DID in one group but almost anything can trigger one or both at the same time and what happens if both are switching and acting out violent memories at the same time? they both could get seriously hurt or killed in the process. For example I have my violent alter margo. When acting out those memories when I get triggered Im very angry and have been known to punch out my best friends boyfriend, Ive also thrown a table, books and so on. Swear alot.. you get the picture now put two people with this type of memory piece in one room and have one or the other have a trigger for example one is wearing perfume which triggers the other. One starts acting out their violent memory piece and in doing so triggering the other person to dissociate and act out their violent memory piece because their trigger is swearing. and very rarely does a group only have two members so add a third who swearing and violent behavior of the other people triggers them to curl up and suck their thumb. now you have three DID's triggered into replaying of dissociated memories and no one to get the situation under control the result is a total massicre or at best a disaster. Which is why here a certified and or licensed person must be on location for this type of group.

So by Contacting mental health agencies in your area and they will be able to help you locate a DID support group in the area if there is one running.
