I am interested in the possible link between mental disorders and giftedness. I have a book that i got that is quite interesting and made me wonder if there really is some overlap. What do you think?

I once heard someone say that genius is 11:59 on a watch -- insane is 12.00.

And without having anything to base that on, my gut feeling says its true. It makes a lot of sense to me that people who experience life outside whats "normal", are also the people who sees new patterns and connections and gets the "insane idea that just might work"

I think one has to give one's definition of giftedness to make one's case either way, even though there is no official definition so the next person might define it in a way that did not match the statistics that the first offered.

This article: http://www.psychologytoday.com/blog/...ental-disorder makes the case that it goes all ways for children; there are those who are misdiagnosed as having a mental disorder and those who do have a mental disorder that is not diagnosed and those that aren't identified as either, when they are one or the other or both.

I think we are able to do things that many others can't do. I have a way with numbers that has helped me gain employment over the years. Interesting thread though, thanks for sharing the info!

It effects everyone differently. Some people have creative periods, some people can not function whatsoever. To say that lots of people with mental disorders become creative or genius doesn't have any basis. Try visiting a State Mental Hospital or a half-way house.
