When I read this quote it brought me in my past. I have met many people and I have shared part of my life with some that have touched my heart. Some I thought were my friends but they were not. There is only one person in my real life that I have kept contact with. Sometime we drifted away as our life is very different from one another but we keep coming back and we still care very much for each other. I have saved her life once. This special person? Yes, I can really say she is my friend. But the others in my real life? No, they are not my friends.

(((((((((((time0)))))))))))))) True friendship is a precious thing to come by. I am happy that you have found someone who fits the criteria. I agree that many people are more acquaintences than friends.

wow what a profound statement...my definition of a friend is someone who knows everything there is to know about you and still stays by your side...

I agree with that part

I'm not so sure I totally agree with this quote. Sure there were times when people I thought were my friends turned out to be something other than that. But, I also believe that not every person that comes into our lives is meant to stay. Does that make them less of a friend? If that person gave all they could give and then was gone from your life, does that mean that the friendship wasn't true?

I think it does. Friends should be there through thick and thin. If they can't give that level of 'commitment' (for want of a better word), then yes there was no friendship there. Or it was one-sided.

For me, I agree. Friends "should" be there through thick and thin. But, some people are not able to do that. That doesn't necessarily mean that there was NEVER any true friendship there. Sometimes, it does though.

"Friends come in and out of your life like busboys in a restaurant."
-Stephen King, Stand By Me Are you still friends with the people you knew when you were eight years old? If not, does that mean you were never really friends at all? |

I think this quote has really hit me because I have been hurt so often.
I can't reply to Ben's question because I don't remember my childhood and I just remember school starting grade 8. Before this, there is only a blank. I also think that maybe people see friendship differently because of their baggage of life, what they have been through, what they have experience. |

That depends. Do children have the cognitive resources to understand the concept of friendship? That only emerges at a later date in their development.
I however agree with Fuzzy that some (or most) people are not able to do that. ![]() |

Children do not have the cognitive capacity to understand the concept of anger until the formal operational stage (about age 12), but that sure doesn't stop them from feeling angry or acting on that anger. Likewise, while a child may not have the cognitive resources to understand the concept of friendship that certainly doesn't stop them from being friends. That's the way I see it, anyway, but I could be way off.
To me, friendship is something that transcends feelings, thoughts, and behaviors. I never define a friend as someone who should feel a certain way about me, or should do something for me. Friendship is a form of love, after all, and trying to put some kind of condition on love is a recipe for disaster. The only person who always does right by me and always looks out for my best interest is Jesus Christ. Everyone else is just a fault-ridden person like me with a tendency to be a jerk at times. I don't throw people over the boat because they screwed up, and I hope they don't throw me over the boat because I screw up. (And I do. Plenty!) |

For me this quote refers to true friendship, not just "passer by's". I am still friends with my best friend from high school, which is a while ago... We don't see each other often because we live far apart, but I know that if I phone him and tell him to get in his car because I need him, he won't think twice! That's friendship, not quatity, but quality!

I think friends can be both ways. There are those who are right there through thick or thin and those who come in and out of your life at different times. We all have our own paths to follow. Sometimes they are parallel and sometimes they veer off only to touch again at some other time. I am not always able to be 100% there for my friends but it doesn't mean they were not often in my thoughts.

Right on! I think this bears repeating!
