That was all the venter said. When the person did not like my answer, they disconnected.

What on earth does one say to that? I am totally asking my T about this tomorrow, too...I have been a listener several times now and have found it somewhat therapeutic for myself. There was another time I felt helpless but the situation was different.

Happily I was able to have a very nice chat with the next person and they said I helped so much and thanked me...but that other is still haunting me.

I don't think there's a correct response. I don't know how I would respond. I guess instead of trying to answer the question, somehow try to direct the conversation in a way to get that person to answer his own question.

I thought about that too...but I felt like I was on Jeopardy and I was going to get disconnected if I said the wrong answer, because like you said, not sure there IS a right one...

This would have been easier had we had ANY conversation, not just one question hanging out there.

Who are we feeling really bad for here? The person who hung up, or the person who doesn't know how to feel about that?

Is this about "feeling bad"? I don't feel "bad" for the caller or for myself. The question was out of left field. I would like to be prepared if it happens again with a way to handle it. I also have no idea if this person was serious or not but I would like to treat it as such.
