Anyone here heard of this? This is what my T thinks I have but I know nothing about it, never even heard of it before! Is anyone familiar with it?

Alexithymia is a descriptor for an individual who has difficulty identifying and understanding emotions. It is in reference more to the self, than others, but can definitely create difficulty in every day relations because of the difficulty in identifying, understanding, and relating to the emotions of other people. Often there can even be difficulties distinguishing distinct physical response/ reaction from an emotional experience.
I obviously can't say if your therapist is correct or not. I am/was very close to a person who experienced this trait. It made things difficult at times because it was continual reminder about trying to access feelings- day in and day out analysis of responses. I think it can be difficult to be unable to describe your emotions- not regarding any appropriate "correct" language, but even in a basic way beyond "good", "bad" , or "meh". As far as I know it is generally regarded as a fairly stable part of a person- not necessarily a psychiatric disorder, though I've heard/read reference to it being a temporary issue that people might revert to when completely overwhelmed. So not one hundred percent sure on that? The severity which some experiences it can dictate how much it affects their lives. |

Thanks. The whole thing is doing my head in. I wish I could get my head round it. I'm just waiting to see what the pdoc says and whether she confirms it or not...
