Sometimes, when there's a lot of talking by other people I get so overwhelmed and I don't understand it.

Like now, my wife and daughter are talking, and I feel like my head is going to explode. I just want piece and quiet....like its too much stimulation. Hard to explain.

This happens a lot. I wish I understood why so I could address it. I brought it up in therapy once, but we didn't spend a lot of time on it.

Anyone ever feel this way? Any insight would be GREATLY appreciated!

Thanks all

I experience it with my husband in particular because he is a non-stop talker even if he's just talking the dog or himself. Somedays it doesn't bother so much but other times I just have to ask him to shut up and I admit not always nicely. I believe it is some sort of overstimulation. My head has thoughts constantly swirling around in it I can't take a lot of external noise or I get really irritable. So you are not alone.

I experience the same feelings particularly when I get around my family. When they talk they are just so overpowering that I just sort of shut down and stop listening. Not really on purpose. I also don't talk much around them because when I do, I get cut off a lot. My grandma pointed out the other day that I don't talk or interact with the others...I told her because when I do, not only do people cut me off, but they also stare at me like I have eight heads. So yes, it is easy to feel overwhelmed around them. Although I get easily overwhelmed with any large group of people.

You are probably an introvert or HSP (highly sensitive personality) there is a book of that name; we need quiet time and get easily overwhelmed.

Thanks everyone. Good to know I'm not alone. I am an introvert. I'm definitely going to check out the book!

My H talks all the time too! Non stop, and it does get to the point that I have gone to the bathroom, or put earphones on (without sound) to find some inner quiet and being overstimulated is tiring. Hard to explain to loved one though. This is a hard one for us, you aren't alone for sure!

I tend to get very agitated when there is a lot of noise going on. I often even watch TV with mute on. Also wear head phones to drown out other house noises. It is one of the reasons I do not go to movies or where there are large crowds.

yes absolutely. It's difficult. I have bipolar and ourhouse is small Igo to the bedroom closet and read on my table or talk on my cell. It helps untill the chatter lessens. I hope this he lps.

I'm sort of weird about that. I do think I have a lot of the high sensitivity trait & I think, the biggest thing I got from that book was the need for downtime to counter the overstimulation.....but I wouldn't say I'm either a straight extra or intro-vert, I have components of both in my personality. I seem to need both, yet, it takes so much more out of me when I do socialise. Perhaps that's why I always stay behind a persona, for the most part.
