Hello all!

I have a friend in Texas which just recently got out from the local hospital. It's a very close friend of mine and since I'm unemployed and cannot help when it comes to financial support, all I can offer is advice on where is possible to seek shelter and get support.

She tells me that there is no help or support available to her and I'm using the web to look for information regarding any help and support which she can get. She's the pessimistic one and I have a hard time buying that it's impossible for her to get help (although from what she has tried, I do believe that from her attempts that it has been impossible so far), so I'm asking here on this forum what can be done for her.

I am asking you which reads this thread, what help and support is available for an unemployed, US citizen with health problems? Only serious replies, thank you. The faster I can get a reply on this, the better!

has she applied for medicaid? looks like tx medicaid is available for adults with no income.

as for shelter, is she homeless? i found this: Texas Homeless Shelters - Texas Homeless Shelters And Emergency Shelters - Texas Homeless Services has homeless shelter directory and other resources.

you're a good friend to try to help.

eta: sometimes it does feel impossible to get help. the important thing to do is keep trying. when you reach a dead end, call another number. there are so many dead ends it can feel hopeless.

Yes, she is homeless. I'm not sure if she has applied for it, but I have forwarded 2 web links for her to check out when ever she access a public place such as library or similiar with internet access.

Since 3 days ago she is sleeping outside and she hasn't found any place which lets her get in. Would be good if I could find a solution for that. The city is Laredo (TX) to be more specific. Wikipedia has some information about the city and what they offer over there and I will look more on it tomorrow...

For security reasons I will skip some details since this is a public forum read by everyone, but so far so good, and thanks for your help so far.

well i looked and it appears there are only 3 shelters in her county! one for men and one for adlescents! and one with a waiting list. that's truly unfortunate. maybe the texas homeless coalition? - Texas Homeless Network and it says to dial 211 for to find help. ive been homeless and i know how bad the situation can be finding resources. there simply isn't enough help for everyone!

good luck.

This is Austin specific but it looks like most of what they list is state or country wide. I would find an org and just call them and ask for people to talk to. Sometimes that personal connection helps.
