I'm a college guy in my early 20s and in later years I have just completely struggled with my hair. Somewhere around puberty, my hair when from straight to poofy, and now to ratty, curly, frizzy, and just plain gross looking! I seriously feel that I can't even ever look good or presentable, because no matter how well I might try to dress, my hair will always just look like a raggedy mop on my head. It doesn't even feel like long hair really, just like a big mass of dry frizz on my head. I hate it. I really really want to just chop it off and have a nice short hairstyle, which I know for almost certain will boost my confidence. However, there are two big reasons why I am so hesitant towards cutting my hair:
1) I sometimes really like it! Some days I have good hair days (although very rare), and those times I really like how it looks on me. When I have gotten my hair straightened I have loved how it looked, but that is not something I am willing to keep up with. After the shower it looks great, but soon after it starts to frizz and looks worse then ever! Sometimes it can look nice and smooth, but rarely. Mostly I can't stand how it looks. 2) I want to donate it eventually. I have always wanted to donate my hair, but after recently getting it trimmed, don't think it's long enough now. (I thought that would help my frizz by getting the split ends cut, but it didn't). Now I would have to wait even longer to get it long enough to donate. This is something I really want to do, because I just want to donate it! Seems like a good cause. But if I cut it now, it is probably too short to donate, and just thinking how long it took to get it to this length! Wouldn't want to start all over. I feel bad because college ends in about a month, and I will have gone through all of college feeling insecure about my hair, and never having experienced a change such as finally getting a haircut. I feel cutting my long hair off now will give me just the boost of confidence I need right now in life. Plus I don't want to sound lame by saying this, but I just want to see people's reactions! Everyone has always known me for my long hair, and well... I sort of want the attention of finally changing my look! And I would love to have that before I leave school forever. I am really stuck right now! ![]() Last edited by rolan86; Apr 13, 2014 at 10:40 PM. |

Straighten a strand and see how long it is. Here are the guidelines for Locks of Love which is who I donate my hair to.
GUIDELINES FOR ACCEPTABLE DONATIONS Hair that is colored or permed is acceptable. Hair cut years ago is usable if it has been stored in a ponytail or braid. Hair that has been bleached (usually this refers to highlighted hair) is not usable. If unsure, ask your stylist. We are not able to accept bleached hair due to a chemical reaction that occurs during the manufacturing process. **If the hair was bleached years ago and has completely grown out it is fine to donate. Hair that is swept off of the floor is not usable because it is not bundled in a ponytail or braid. Hair that is shaved off and not in a ponytail or braid is not usable. If shaving your head, first divide hair into multiple ponytails to cut off. We cannot accept dreadlocks. Our manufacturer is not able to use them in our children’s hairpieces. We also cannot accept wigs, falls, hair extensions or synthetic hair. Layered hair is acceptable if the longest layer is 10 inches. Layered hair may be divided into multiple ponytails. Curly hair may be pulled straight to measure the minimum 10 inches. 10 inches measured tip to tip is the minimum length needed for a hairpiece. Check around on the internet though because there are probably other places that take shorter hair. Since I was a teenager I have donated over 5 feet of hair. It is a great feeling to know what it is used for. I'm sorry you feel stuck. Hopefully your hair is long enough right now and you can go tomorrow to get it cut if you feel like it. Good luck ![]() |

Just measured it and I have a little over a foot! I want to have some hair afterwards, so I think the extra 2 inches or so might give me a good new hairstyle? Thanks by the way.

Based on your description of your hair this came to mind. Not sure how much you look like this guy but I find him attractive.

Hey yeah that picture is actually really close! I don't quite look just like that, but the hair is a bit similar, not THAT poofy and frizzy but close enough! I can't stand it, I feel gross and grungy always looking like that. It has a weird effect on my mood, and makes me feel like my mood should always reflect the gloominess of my hair. But really you find that kind of hairstyle attractive? I can't help but feel I put people off because of it.

I'm confused when you say that your hair looks best after it's washed, THEN it becomes frizzy. Do you mean it looks fine when it's wet, then looks frizzy when it dries?
If that's the case… Washing removes oils and makes dry hair frizzy, so you can either put oil back in (like Luster's Pink oil or some other leave-in conditioner), dry your hair with a hair-dryer with a diffuser (don't let it air dry) or don't wash your hair very often. If you have that dry of hair and you wash it everyday, your hair will actually look worse than if you wash it every 2-3 days (or once a week, or like me, once every 1-2 weeks). And you can always use "dry" shampoo to remove the oil from your scalp area in between the times you wash it with shampoo/conditioner (with your type of hair, it would probably be beneficial to use conditioner). My hair is rarely frizzy now because I do all of that (and use a bunch of other products as well) even when it's really curly. |
