Mental health stigma, anyone?

GEEEEEEZE. You know, there's a *reason* I don't read the paper on my days off.....I'm not sure what possessed me to pick it up today.

Lifted directly from the AP wire:

China is imposing new restrictions on foreign adoptions, barring applicants who are unmarried, obese, older than 50 or who take antidepressants, according to U.S. adoption agencies.

The restrictions are meant to limit adoptions to "only the most qualified families," said the Web site of one agency, Harrah's Adoption International Mission in Spring, Texas.

The move comes amid a surge in foreign applications to adopt Chinese children. The United States is the No. 1 destination for children adopted abroad, but the number going to Europe and elsewhere is rising.

[b](((((((((((((((((MEGA-GROWL))))))))))))))) from a single, obese, antidepressant-taking, middle-aged bear!

I think it stinks. thank goodness there are other countries to adopt from that do not have those stipulations! China is very very strict.

I stand by a statement made by a former psych. professor (also a well-respected therapist in our community):

I'm not worried about the people in therapy. I'm worried about all those people driving up and down (the interstate) thinking they're ok." this is outrageous!

Why do agencies like these have to make decisions based on labels? How about looking into each person/couple seeking to adopt, and evaluating everything you can about them, rather than see "antidepressants" and ripping up the application?

It's just like zero tolerance in schools for some things. It's an excuse not to use one's brain.

Young people who need to be on meds but do not are a whole lot scarier then older people on meds.

Since the whole world now knows who they will screen out... what's the incentive for those applicants to tell the truth??? this is outrageous!

I thought medical records were confidential anyway. Aren't they?
