So here it is, I just feel like I need to get it all out there.

I had very healthy mental health until the age of 29. Then out of no where, I went 2-3 days not sleeping and this developed into a 1-2 day catatonic psychosis. No prior mental health history other than a little bit of anxiety in college. I can remember every detail of the psychosis.

The Dr's drugged me and shuffled me along. I was on risperdol and went back to "normal" for 3 weeks. Then I plummeted and had a depressive episode that I believe was from the drugs I was on. Instead of getting the drugs out of my system... they gave me more drugs. Abilify and lexapro. I've been stable ever since with 2 smaller depressive episodes over a 2 1/2 year period. They were nothing that some coping skills could not get through.

I am a very happy stable person. I was diagnosed bipolar. I do not have manic or major depressive episodes. I do not have problems with gambling, spending, smoking or alchohol.

My obgyn recently found that I have a thyroid problem in addition to PCOS. The abilify has made me gain 70 lbs in 2 years, it is exacerbating my insulin resistance, and has elevated my cholesterol.

Does anyone have experience with a misdiagnosed bipolar that was actually an underlying health problem? We are researching right now what could have caused the original psychosis. There are many medical conditions that could have. Now I'm trying to find the right DR's to get to the bottom of what has happened. Any experiences are appreciated.

Hello, hummingbird11, and welcome to Psych Central! I had a low thyroid which I think contributed to my depression. I now take a med for it.

I do think folks need to be checked out for physical problems before it's just assumed that they have a mental diagnosis.
