how many people have i heard say that animals don't have feelings?
if we all had $1.00 for everytime someone has said that we'd be wealthy.

yesterday and today, the first things that my three cats did after going outside was go and sit on Amsu's grave........... pet loss

they never, ever go to the front yard and that is where he is buried......

has anyone else ever experienced this? i've had dogs that grieved but three cats are going out there together and sitting there..........do they communicate? they must........xoxoxo pat

yes pat....i have experienced this when i had to put one of my cocker spaniels to sleep...the other one was sick for days......and how anyone can think that pets have no feelings is beyond me.....they are the only creatures on this earth who can sense how we are feeling and react to it........

My father had a specially trained mule which he rode so he could be in the woods. One time Dad fell off and couldn't get back on her. His dog sat huddled next to him to keep him warm and the mule stood over them both to protect them.

When Dad died, the mule would come to the spot where Dad always hobbled out to feed her treats and she would cry. She almost mourned herself to death. It was so sad.

Whenever one of our pets, rather cat or dog had to be put down, the remaining pet(s) always went through a period of grieving/mourning, it was sad to see this, as well as sad for us. pet loss
I've seen several nature shows that were about this topic, elephants especially, was one of them that amazed me, and I found very touching/sad.
I've also seen situations where a living animal will go over and nudge the one who had died, trying to bring it around. Yes, I truly believe animals have feelings, though they may not express them in the same manner humans, it appears to be obvious that there is some special connection they share amongst themselves.
I remember so clearly, the helpless look one of our dogs gave me as she glanced over to where the cat use to like to catch the sun's rays.
I personally find, losing a pet as saddening as losing a family member, after all they are family too.
Sorry to hear of your loss.

oh I know. Even the new puppy who was here just a week or so before I had to put my Figaro down, when I didn't come home with him... the puppy went room to room to room looking for him, and then laid down on Figaro's bed, quietly.

There is a book about this, and other things that animals would tell us if we knew how to listen to them. The book is "If Only We Would Listen" by Julie Bristoe. She mostly writes about goats, but it would apply to other species just as well.

Yes, animals do mourn. They understand a lot more than we give them credit for, and they want to know what's going on. If one of their friends or member of their family dies, and they just don't see them again, they have a hard time with that and will keep looking. They seem to cope better if they know what happened. It makes sense. Look at what people will do and what they go for trying to find out what happened if someone they love is missing. We all need closure so that we can grieve properly, and if we don't grive properly we never can really move on.
