Hi everyone. Throughout my life I have had disturbing thoughts and fantasies about losing toys that I am emotionally attached to, like comfort blankets etc. I can't look st anything to do with toy donation without getting upset. I even bought a baby's toy once for no reason apart from the fact that I might never see one like it again. Could this possibly be caused by a bad vhildhood experience in which I lost a treasured toy? Also does anyone else have a problem like this? Thank you

I don't know if your problem is caused by a bad childhood experience, but I had a similar problem and do connect it with my childhood.

I grew up very poor. I didn't have a lot of toys. I went through a phase where I purchased the toys I wished I could have had as a kid... and then didn't really know what to do with them because my friends hadn't started having kids yet

I am not sure that we have similar problems. I think my problems is that I am really sensitive emotionally. I can burst into tears while making tea or something for almost no reason. I find that lotd of films and stories trigger these feeling. I was a really sensitive child. I was scared easily too.

Perhaps holding onto your toys gives you comfort and the thought of losing them is difficult because you have not found a replacement for the comfort you received from your toys? IDK just an hypothesis.
Thanks for this!

in reference to your title question ...

for some people this is called OCD (obsessive Compulsive Disorder)
for some people this is called a phobia
for some people this is called unconsciously wanting to have children/be a parent/ needing to parent oneself
for some people doing this is a result of poverty
for some people this is a grounding/comforting/tool
for some people this is a therapy exercise they have chosen to continue to do.
for some people this is normal
for some people....

my point is this can be just about any mental /physical/normal thing and reason.....

with in me this was a grounding/self nurturing tool that I chose to continue doing and it escolated during the months my wife and I were planning and after pregnancy. now I channel this urge into supplying my children with the things that they need...food clothing shelter, toys....

unfortunately we are unable to tell you why this is happening with in ....you. for that you will need to consult your own treatment providers...therefore my suggestion is if this continues to bother you talk with your treatment providers. they will be able to diagnose this problem and if needed help you to understand the hows/whys and what to do about it in a way that is best for you.

One day I was looking at a photo of me in my bedroom when I was about nine and I realized that I still own pretty much everything that was on the walls and shelves behind me. Seriously.

I have a very hard time getting rid of things. I remember the panic I felt when my mom made me "sell" her my dolls so I could have a softball glove because the coach said I couldn't play with my old t-ball glove. I had bad asthma and softball was the only sport I was allowed to play. (It was the 70's -- I know things are different now.)

One time my parents cleaned out my closet and threw out my old cast, which btw, I had in the summer and was pretty rank. That was also the time they threw out my saddle oxfords. I'd outgrown them. But I still miss the shoes.

For me, I think some of it was a reaction to my brother's death. I think that's why I always take photos of those near & dear.

Oddly, I've been able to get rid of more things since my patents died.
