I colored when I was locked up, but I think I would enjoy a good variety puzzle book myself or reading a good book. I know the magazines there were so many years old it was ridiculous

Anything good to read.
Puzzle books Crosswords Soduko Some units allow knitting / crochet if she does either of those, but check before hand. I've been on units within the same hospital with different rules. splitimage |

Movies! There should be a TV, but the DVD might have to be handled by staff. Series, too.
Board games. Chess, checkers, Scrabble.... Run the options by staff first. Depends on how strict they are. Where I was we had board games, art supplies, a Wii (with few games), and we could watch movies (operated by staff). |

Reading books or magazines, talking or messaging with friends through phone (if she can keep it), listening to music with iPod, crosswords, drawing, making jewels, learning a language with a book, writing letters for relatives and friends, keeping a diary in which she can write her thoughts and feelings and what she wants to do when you can go out and sketching drawings and whatever she wants.
If I have other ideas I'll tell you ![]() And try to go and see her as often as you can! How long is she supposed to stay there? |

A variety of magazines. Browse a magazine stand at the store and find something on subjects she may be interested in and also something new that may be interesting. There's such a variety of mags out there on things you know and love and things you would never think of.

They usually have a social room where they have all kinds of magazines & they do always have the art therapy every day. I was in before there were ipods so I always took my CD player. They always had board games in the community room also & it was always a good place to sit & chat with others at times when I felt safe enough to get out of my room & myself. Different hospitals I was in were also different....some where more oriented on the social aspect of being there others not so much. Private mental health hospitals were definitely more personal than the hospital oriented ones.

I journal education a lot when I was in the hospital. Reading helped too, drawing is good but my hands were shaking too bad for that.
