I have just received some exciting news! Staff and volunteers around the town I live in have deceided to open a "drop in center". This would allow adults to come and enjoy a cup of coffee and read the newspaper that have no where else to go. This is a free service. I'm so excited. This was talked about in the past, but never passed.

Do many of you know of any such centers? I would love to hear how successful or unsuccessful they were. I have faith that this will be a hit. The people that would frequent this place would be low income, mentally ill and physically handicap. Finally there will be an adult center for them to come and have a free cup of coffee and get some support.

Many small business donated money to buy the supplies. Isn't this great?! Again, if anyone has experience or can give me advice in any aspect of this I would love to hear from you. Keep your fingers crossed.

Hi will.

In French Canada (province of Québec), we have such centers, but they are getting numbered.

Nonetheless, there is support for those in need, it's a lot better than in other places, I guess.

Your work is important. Creating places like yours helps the whole community, in a way.

Take care,

that sounds great. i am not familiar with anything like that that I have seen. Once it is open, does it just work on the volunteers and continued donations from local business? what a great way for them to contribute to the community, something i would think benefits everyone in the community.

I didn't know whether to use a trophy, smile or heart as the icon of my post. This is a great idea and I certainly approve. The closest thing I can think of that might be similar is the day centers for the homeless. These homeless centers are for "members only" though, so you have to be homeless and a registered guest to use their services. I love that a center such as the one you are talking about will allow everyone, and not just homeless. Lower income people can't afford to spend money on various forms of entertainment, so a place such as this will be an excellent source of support and I am sure many new friendships.

Hi Dex,
yes, it does work on volunteers only and we will continue to get donations from local business. The small town that I live in needs this very much. Low income people dont have a place to go during the day. At this friendship center, they now will. I'm sooooo excited. Thanks everyone for listening. My husband is supportive but It's a differant kind of support from this site. thanks again. I'll fill you all in as the pages turn.
