I was inpatient when one of the hospital docs thought I had a particular diagnosis (aspergers), not knowing me but reading my records. I found out the next doc I was scheduled to see was a doc that I used to have for over a year. I thought he would for sure know if that was accurate. The dialouge was as follows:

Me:"one of the docs here said I has aspergers, is that true?"
Pdoc"oh that"
Me: "is that true?"
Pdoc:"that diagnosis does not affect your treatment plan"
Me:"so do I have that?"
Pdoc:"that diagnosis does not affect your treatment plan"

He said that one more time and I gave up. What am I supposed to think about that?

An Asperger's diagnosis makes a big difference in treatment. At one time I was told I had BPD. None of the treatment for that disorder worked. After my ASD diagnosis I was finally heard and understood. My problems had very different origins than BPD. For example my social issues had nothing to do with abandonment fears.

They now have me as BPD also, but I think I'm having severe meltdowns because I had them as a child, where either BP or ADHD was mixed in too.

I'm sorry that happened, sweetheart. If you can get a second opinion from someone else, or get the information from another source in your treatment team, do that. It's only fair to know. Plus, as stated above, Asperger's would definitely affect your treatment plan, especially if you were only diagnosed with depression or anxiety issues. Definitely go to someone else. Hugs.

Opinions vary, I've been confused since I learned of AS in 2007. Mostly tdocs think I have it and pdocs deny it.

Hello. Having a diagnosis of Aspergers would totally affect treatment. My pdoc thinks I have it and want to go get testing to confirm that, but I'm DXed with anxiety and OCD. Having Aspergers could contribute to why these issues aren't going away. I have social anxiety, and my pdoc thinks my lack of social understanding is contributing to my social anxiety, which makes perfect sense, but we are just treating social anxiety because she can't DX with me with autism (ASD). So when asked to do things, the results I may get from the experiment may be negative because of lack of social skills. So I would find someone who specializes in ASD and get an official diagnosis and once that's done, show your pdoc and state that certain things may not work because of this or whatever. Anyways, I hope you figure out what to do "That diagnosis does not affect your treatment plan".

Social anxiety disorder, GAD, OCD, and panic attacks

Lexapro, 10 mg

Wow. Just WOW. Your pdoc sounds a lil hinky -- like territorial or something! As an Aspie who has anxiety/depression, I am astonished that your pdoc is so blase about a dx of ASD! That's just nutz, if you'll pardon the expression.

ASD affects absolutely everything imo...including your perceptions, which are, yanno, kinda basic and essential to any treatment plans. Jeesch, I'd be rather upset were I in your shoes, I'm afraid. Best of luck to you in getting a comprehensive treatment paln going w/someone who understands Aspergers. Sounds like your current pdoc doesn't want to deal w/it at all. Grrr! /end rant Chyia, outraged on your behalf
Thanks for this!

My caseworker started treating me a little like I had an ASD when she realized my house was full of bird stuff and I had a bird book on the table and I happened to know an awful lot about birds... But she left and now I don't know about new caseworker.

Perhaps you can discuss this with your psychotherapist who can then talk to your psychiatrist. It may be futile since the psychiatrist has no interest in considering ASD. Is it possible to get a new psychiatrist?

BPD and ASD can appear similar on the surface, but they are two very different disorders. For example the social issues for ASD have a lot to do with theory of mind and interpreting nonverbal behavior such as facial expressions. In BPD it is abandonment and identity. It is very possible to have both disorders.

I've read some of your other posts and have wondered if you were misdiagnosed. What other ASD traits do you have?

I was forced to have friends as a child, they put me through social skills therapy, im still told i have bad social skills, I get extremely obsessive about subjects since I was a child, I had and have severe meltdowns when I can't handle things, I have lots of stims, and people have told me I have empathy problems and my own husband observed I don't respond well to non verbal stuff, I've had friends, family and even strangers think I have it. I'm a woman which could cause diagnosis problems.

I'm depressed and talked to a mental health worker and I brought this up and I was told my mental health team does not believe I am on the autism spectrum, instead I sort of look like it because I'm gifted.
